THE JEFFERSONIAN, TOWSON, MARYLAND Saturday, March 29, 1924—Page 3 PIGEON MASCOT WATCHES OVER BIG VESSEL FROM "FRISCO," NOW LYING OFF COUNTY WATER-FRONT Named "Fluff" By Crew, For Ten Months Bird Has Made Its Home In Masts Of The " Centaurus"—Terriffic Storms At Sea Did Not Mar Its Apparent Happiness. Just as an albatross watched over the destinies of the vessel on which sailed the "Ancient Mariner," a gray pigeon sails the Atlantic and Pacific coasts aboard the steamship Centaurus of the Norton Lilly Steamship Company, now lying off the Baltimore ************************** S. For 10 months the pigeon, called Fluff by the crew, has been aboard the Centaurus. In these 10 months everything has gone smoothly. The terriffic storms have not bothered the Centaurus, for she has missed them all. Naturally, the superstitious sailors lay all their luck to the pigeon. While the Centaurus was loading cargo here the little pigeon flew aboard the ship. No effort was made to catch him, but the hardy sailors enjoyed watching his antics during the day, and fed him as the ship lay here. When the Centaurus steeamed from the harbor Fluff was perched on the deck rail, forward. Except for occasional flights of a few hours, he stuck faithfully by the vessel and has never been caged. Sailors aboard the centaurus say he has traveled more than 20,000 miles. In San Francisco he found a mate and they nested amidships. The mate stuck faithfully until the ship reached Boston, where she deserted. On the trip two squabs were hatched out, but died. Once a sailor, longing for a change in food, followed in the footsteps of the Ancient Mariner, who shot the Albotross, and suggested a pigeon pot-pie would be palatable. He was hooted down.
