MEMORANDUM (S1259-121- 1715) 01/19/90 FROM: Ed TO: Shirley CONCERNING: Letter to Christine Jordan, 90-4887 Dear Christine: I very much appreciate the copy of the Barren v. Baltimore materials in RG 267. The case would make a very good story for a PBS series. Not only is it an early attempt to extend the due process clause to protect personal property rithe effects of an action by a local jurisdiction (Baltimore City), it also is Marshall's last case in which he not only appears to reverse himself, but also is upholding the arguments made by his successor as Maryland's Attorney General (Taney). I would be happy to share any of the research we have done to date with you and your friend. Perhaps we could meet someday for lunch here or in Washington. Just give me a call to set up a mutually convenient time. A member of my staff, Nancy Bramucci, will be using the case in her Masters thesis at Williamsburg which focuses on the history of Fells Point. Ultimately Nancy will know a great deal about the people involved in the case at the local level (we even have the jury list for a parallel case involving a neighboring wharf). Sy ECP cc: NMB copy of all to me; if Nancy has not done the xerox of the NARA materials, could you do it for her and give me the originals?
