About the Authors Fred W. Friendly has spent virtually all his life in journalism: practicing it, shaping it, teaching it, and writing about it. With his partner, Edward R. Murrow, Mr. Friendly was responsible for many of television's most distinguished mo- ments, including See It Now and CBS Reports. After serving as president of CBS News from 1964 to 1966, Mr. Friendly joined the Ford Foundation and was named the Edward R. Murrow Professor of Journalism at Columbia University. As com- munications advisor at the Foundation, he was the originating force behind the Media and Society Seminars, which created the television project "The Constitu- tion: That Delicate Balance." Mr. Friendly has written several books, including Minnesota Rag and The Good Guys, the Bad Guys and the First Amendment. Martha J. H. Elliott is a television producer, a writer, and an instructor at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. A graduate of Vassar Col- lege and Columbia University, Ms. Elliott has worked at NEC News, at WNET, and with Mr. Friendly on many writing and television projects. In addition, she is a wife and mother and lives with her husband James Cornell and daughter Hadley in New Canaan, Connecticut.
