127 Milburn Street. Elktun, Maryland. December 2£zdt 1*31. The Honorable Mr. A. Ritchie Governor of Maryland. Annapolis, Maryland. My dear sir. As a race man and a citizen of this Country. I am hereby fowarding you this letter for your careful consideration, on behalf of the American TTegroe. Dealing solely on the "lynching" o t earn**, It is a matter of fact, that these cases are "becoming more prevalent.---For we find within a week of the previous month, we have on record, "three lynchings". One in Maryland, and two in West Virginia. The latter happening in the same town.---Surely there must he some solution to solve this difficult problem. we appreciate very highly the things you have done for us.--- But the greatest desire that over a million Negroes are asking now. is, ample protection from "moh violence".---We want the projection that will prohibit our being taken from jails.--Only to he tortured, hanged, and our hudies riddled with bullets by ¦mbfes" Statistics prove that we are a law abiding people. And it is a matter of fact, that we do approve of the law taking it's course. But the mobs claim they do these things to set examples. ---So shy not inforce the "lav.-" to punish the members of the "mobs" for the saute reason? Do we have to submit to protect ourselves? Or shall the law b« efficient enough to give us ample protection? As has bean stated before, something must be done. I am sincerly yours Major Colman, 30 Bdgmors avenue lee Y^rk City, *.Y. loo N, lanarnaJcer S^. I.Xhila, Penn, B,*„* T Portlan Virginia. Hlyde Pe.ssicks Secy.
