The chief of these,llthey say, arises from the racial questions growing out of the lynchin g of Matthew Williams, colored, at Salisbury, several weeks ago. Investigation Belittled His critics are inclined to belittle the investigations now being conducted by State officials into the Eastern Shore lynching and other race demonstrations. The situation, they claim, is packed with dynamite so far as Governor Ritchie's garnering of support in several States is concerned. Friends of the Governor, on the other hand, say he is doing and has done all in his power to clarify matters. He has done the one thing possible in regard to the lynching by leaving the investigation of the Salisbury tragedy in the hands of Attorney General William Preston Lane, jr. But delays in the trial of Orphan Jones, colored, also known as Yuel Lee, charged with slaying a family of four, and in the trial of George Davis, also colored, on a charge of attempted criminal assault on a white woman, are aggravating an already serious situation. Jones Decision Delayed The Court of Appeals has delayed since December 17 in deciding whether Jones shall be tried on the Eastern Shore, where the crime was committed, or in Baltimore, where the man has been kept for safety. Davis is also in the Baltimore city jail. His trial is set for January 5, in Elkton. |
