Near the clump of trees on the north (right) side of the road, Braddock's Road crosses the Cumberland Road. A few rods westward from this point begins the eastern approach to the "Shades of Death." Near this spot the third brigade of Braddock's Army encamped on June 15, 1755. As early as 1830 John Recknor kept an old wagon stand less than a quarter of a mile east from this point.
