June 13, 1914.] MARYLAND SUFFRAGE NEWS 85 THE AMIS IN THE FIRST DISTRICT Rumor has it that the anti-suffragists are planning a crusade in East Baltimore, where they will open headquarters on South Broadway for two weeks during the latter part of June. How strange it is that they should choose this time, when the president and several of the active workers of the district are campaigning in (iarrett-eounty. It makes one think of the old saying, "When the cat's away the mice will play." But the suffragists never leave the field unguarded, (iood workers are at the helm, and, besides, the army will return with colors flying. CLUB WOMEN PROVE VOTE'S VALUE Interesting Opiniana From Waatarn Woman Voter*. There is nothing like the test of experiment to clear up conflicting theories. A circular-letter of Inquiry was lately sent by the editor of the Woman's Journal to the presidents of the State federations of Women's Clubs in the suffrage States and to the chairmen of their legis- lative committees, asking whether the ballot caused women to lose their non-partisan influence, and whether they found the ballot an advantage to them in securing good public measures. As the club women all over the country are working for improved legislation, they are in a good |k>- sition to judge of this question, especially such of them as have worked for improved legislation both before and since women gained the right to vote. The answers are instructive. These cx)>ericiiced clubwomen arc unanimous in saying that the ballot has brought women increased res|>ect and added jwwer for good. Mrs. Benjamin lr. l'agc, chairman of the Illinois Legislative Committee, writes: "The politicians all over the State |>ay much more attention to what the women want. Women arc going to be a great power for non-partisanship in all the questions that affect the public welfare." Mrs. Sarah A. Kvans, President of Oregon, says: "The clubwomen of Oregon find that in every measure they undertake, suffrage gives them an advantage they never had before. Men are realizing that |>arty counts for very little where pure food, improved sanitation or protection for children is involved." Mrs. J. S. McKee, President of the State of Washington, says: "Kqual suffrage has increased woman's influence without decreasing her dignity." Mrs. James W. Orr, President of California, says: "Legislators re- gard women's opinions with decidedly more respect.. It is certainly a power to have the ballot. We get better legislation." Mrs. Henry D, Koss, President of Arizona, says: "We find that women of all parties want such things as pure food, improved sanitation, protection of children, etc., and their united influence for such measures is more powerful because it has votes behind it." Mrs. K. A. Morton, President of Wyoming, says: "The Eastern women are as a nation without a navy; the votes to us are superdread- naughts." And Mrs. Millie R. Trumbull, chairman of the Oregon Legis- lative Committee, voices the unanimous opinion when she answers the question "Would you wish to have equal suffrage repealed?" "Great heavens, no!"—Woman's Journal of June & EUGENICS We got a queer disease, my sister'n f, That makes folks allers give us the go-by; 'Tain't nothin' like the measles nor the mumps; It don't come out in s|xjts, nor yet in bumps. It's cuz o' somethin' 'I hapiwned long ago, When we was home with Ma an' Pa, yer know, An' Pa was out o' work fer most a year, An' Ma was sick. O my, you'd oughter hear Her cough! Twas fierce! An'Pa, he useter say: "The kills 'd do well if we was out the way." So then he up an' shot hisself an' Ma. Folks saiil 'at he was kinder crazed—|mor Pa! An' somehow 'n other that give Meg an' me This queer disease they call "heredity." —Mary I "ida Clark, in The Surrey. Chairman Robert L. Henry of the rules committee has refused to see delegations of women who come to Washington for the purpose of urging him to report a rule providing for the consideration of the Mondell woman suffrage resolution. Mr. Henry explains that he refuses to see the women "because they were coming too thick and fast." "I began to see them at every turn anil corner," he continued, "like the fellow in Shakespeare—was it Hamlet of Macbeth? The fact is that I have no authority to report such a rule, and cannot do so until the Democratic caucus rescinds its former action."
