Published every Saturday at Towmii, Baltimore County, Maryland, by The Baltimore County Jeflersonlan Publishing Company, Incorporated. OFFICERS. . "W. Gill Smith Elmer R. Halle, President. Secretary. Wm. J. Peach, Martin J. O'Hara, Vice-President. Treasurer. BOARD OF DIRECTORS John M. Dennis William J. Peach, Martin J. O'Hara, W. Gill Smith, Carville D. Benson. Elmer R. Haile, Logie Bonnett LOGIE BONNETT, Editor and Manager SATURDAY, JANUARY 10, 1920 NATION WITHOUT A BREAD-LINE. "At this hour, from the Atlantic to the Pacific, there Is not a bread line or public soup kitchen." The foregoing quoted words were uttered by George M. Reynolds, president of the Continental and Commercial National Bank of Chicago, perhaps the second largest banking institution In the country. Mr. Reynolds was talking to a staff correspondent of the Washington Star, who was visiting Chicago to ascertain the business situation and to gain the views of thoughtful men upon the treaty, politics and kindred subjects. George M. Reynolds is a Republican and in recent years has been a heavy contributor to the Bepublican campaign fund. But his quoted words indicate that he is not so much a partisan that he will not admit, an obvious truth, which is that America never was so prosperous. It Is not to be supposed that Mr. Reynolds' intended to deprive the Republican political leaders of their old-time campaign cry that Republican success means the full dinner pall. The fact is, however, he did that very thing and It is significant that within a few days after the appearance of the Reynolds' interview Republican chieftains announced the full dinner pail would not be numbered among the G. O. P. slogans in 1020. "The great mass of the people are prosperous and contented," was another utterance the Washington Star correspondent credited to Mr. Reynolds. Proof of this fact was found on Christmas Day when charitable organizations throughout the nation were unable to muster hardly a corporal's guard to partake of bounteous spreads provided for the poor. Commenting upon the absenc- of the bread-line, the New York Christmas editorial *Not In many years, If ever, has the number of homeless and destitute persons been so small as this winter. It is an encouraging condition. Plenty of work and good pay Is the general rule. With few exceptions, the cases of idleness arc those who refuse opportunities to work or belong to the class of chronic lazy whom neither pride nor self-respect can urge to earn a decent living. Short of bad health or hard luck, the man out of a job and walking the streets can hope for little sympathy." three months, to the subject of local legislation. Capable presiding officers for the two Houses have been chosen—Senator Nor-ris, of Baltimore city, as President of the Senate, and Delegate Tydings, of Harford county, as Speaker of the House—and the Democrats, who have a working majority in each House, seem disposed to support Governor Ritchie in his efforts to redeem the pledges contained in the platform upon which he was elected. One of the pledges in this platform, of particular interest to the people of the county, is that providing for the building of secondary or lateral roads to connect up with the State roads already built. While the redemption of this particular pledge may mean an increase in State taxes, it should not be opposed on that account, because it will mean a permanent improvement of benefit to all the counties in the State. There are many State roads now in Baltimore county and the advantages which accrue from them are everywhere manifest. Any movement on the part of the State to build lateral roads to connect up with these great arteries of travel should be encouraged. The additional taxes we pay toward such a project, should not be looked upon as ordinary operating expenses, but as a permanent investment for the good of the whole State. Some consideration should also be given the subject of road legislation for Baltimore county. The consensus of opinion seems to be that the road laws should be revised, but no one has so far, to our knowledge, presented a concrete plan for revision, excepting Mr. Edward H. Burke. Mr. Burke's plan, which was discussed in these columns two weeks ago, presents many advantages over the existing law. Perhaps some one else can sug-gest an even better plan. The important thing to do is for every public-spirited citizen of the county to give the matter immediate consideration and advise with our representatives in the Legislature to the end that the best possible road law may be enacted. There are other local matters of importance which will come before the General Assembly, and which The Jef-fersonian will from time to time discuss for the information of its readers. THREE DAY SESSION HELD Rural Life Club Holds Meetings In The Public School At Eklo. Commencing Wednesday evening a three day session, under the auspices of the Rural Life Club of the Sixth district was held at Eklo, in the public school building. Dr. Shaw, of the Maryland State College, spoke on Thursday afternoon, while Miss Kath-erine Ki*wan, of the Baltimore County Children's Aid Society, also addressed the gathering. At night an illustrated lecture was given by Dr. McCall, of the Maryland State Experiment Station, on his work in France. A conference between Dr. McCall and representatives from different organizations of the county was held yesterday (Friday) morning in the interest of starting agricultural experiment work in the county. In the afternoon and evening addresses were made by Dr. Buckley and Miss Day, of the Maryland State College. NEW ADVERTISEMENTS. ANNUAL STATEMENT. Holidays presuppose work days. In that case how does the Republican Congress justify its two weeks' vacation? It is a problem with the professional thief now-a-days to decide what he shall steal—Sugar or coal. There'll be no relief from high prices until some of the profiteers are landed safely behind prison bars, there to stay for a long, long term. President Wilson ate a hearty Christmas dinner, says the news. "Doctor" Moses doubtless read that announcement with interest and wonder. SIX COWS. Apply on the Ground of MARYLAND TRAINING SCHOOL FOR BOYS l-101t LOCH RAVEN, MD. STATE OF MARYLAND. Office of the Secretary of State. Senator Gronna was in the midst of a fine speech against his party's "gag rule" in the Senate when he was gagged and could proceed no further. The recent history of the Senate seems to show that a "Progressive" is a Republican politician who backs up when "Boss" Penrose gives the order. It will hardly be safe for the census* enumerators'to assume that a woman is as old as she looks, for remember the old song, "You can't tell the mothers from the daughters." There were fewer calls for charity on Christmas this year than ever before. Republicans failed in their effort to make an issue of the war, and now they can point to no famine as a reason for putting them in power. Pes-tlence is the only hope remaining. As a result of the generosity and charitableness of John D. Rockefeller, on Christmas Day, when he gave away $100,000,000 to the American people for various relief works, gasoline, coal oil and lubricants manufactured by the John D's. Standard Oil Co., have been advanced one cent per gallon each. The $100,000,000 donation was spread across the front page of nearly every daily paper in the United States. It was cheap publicity at that for John D. and In a few weeks he'll have it all back and more too. It looks to us like a case of "robbing Peter to pay Paul." TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: Notice is hereby given that application has been made to the Governor of Maryland for the pardon or parole of WESLEY DEAL, alias WEST DEAL, who was convicted at the September term, 1905, in the Circuit Court for Baltimore County of Murder in the Second Degree, and sentenced on November 27th, 1905, to the Maryland Penitentiary for the period of eighteen years. Webster's Dictionary And Ours No. 27 advertisements "Prepare" WEBSTERS: Prepare—to adapt for a particular end or purpose; make ready; fit. OURS PREPAR-ation as we know it in this big store is a matter of planning months and months ahead in the selection of merchandise, so as to have it seasonable and at hand at the proper moment—at the time when our customers need it most. During the world crisis which has passed, Stewart vision and Stewart preparedness were the factors that won for us thousands of new friends. In times of peace as well as war you will find the house of Stewart ever ready, ever prepared to fill your every want. TEWARTBc1 In Connection With James McCreery & Co., New York.
