| January 24, 1920—Page 2 THE JEFFERSONIAN, TOWSON, MARYLAND. LOCAL CORRESPONDENCE (Continued from Page 1.) FREELAND. On last Saturday morning-. Mrs. R. A. Cooper, an aged and highly respected citizen, passed from our midst. She was in her 82nd year. Her funeral took place on Monday afternoon at Pine Grove, the Rev. J. H. Lehman officiating. She had spent sixty-two years of happy married life and the thought of a separation to her husband, Mr. John W. Cooper, who was in feeble health, wasi such a strain physically, that he too, passed away on Wednesday morning. He wag in* his 84th year, and his funeral took place this (Saturday) afternoon at 2 o'clock. This aged couple had been connected with the Pine Grove U. B. Church for a number of years. Mrs. Cooper was1 a charter member of said church. They are Survived by one son and six daughters, twenty-nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Mr. J. Adam Shuppard, of near this place, is seriously ill at this writing. It would seem that the very disagreeable weather, we have been having has been productive not only of much sickness, but quite a number of deaths. It is almost impossible in some instances, to secure the aid of a physician when needed. As this community is isolated from the location of a doctor, it would be an excellent place for one to locate. ------------------0------------------¦ FORK. Don't forget the Darlington Minstrels at Shirley Hall tonight. An evening of fun is promised all who attend. Mrs. David A. Harlan, who has been quite ill the past week. is\ slightly improved. Miss Myrtle Munnikhuysen has also been ill, but is slightly improved. Quarterly meeting today at the parsonage at 2 o'clock. Preaching Sunday at 11 A. M. at Fork M. E. Church by District Superintendent, Dr. John S. Ensor. Miss Carrie Clark spent the Week-end with her aunt, Mrs. A. D. Mumma, ----------o---------- WOODLAWN. Mrs. Ella Baldwin entertained at a dinner last Saturday. Missi Lida Slade entertained the White Hall Book Club on Monday. Howard Wiley, who was injured in the foot while in France, and who has been in the hospital at Fort McHenry since his return to this country, is now at the Church Home and Infirmary, where he will submit to an operation for his foot. Mr. William J. Stull, taxidermatist, is busily engaged in his work, having received from Pennsylvania, quite a number of furs of various kinds and several deer heads for mounting. ----------o---------- PORESTOiX. Mists Virgie Hare has returned home after an extensive visit in the city. Mr. Ralph Tracey, who has been suffering with pneumonia, contracted after an operation for appendicitis, is improving rapidly at this writing. Mrs. William Tracey spent Sunday in Baltimore. Mr. and Mrs. Harrison Cox vis'ted the latter's parents on Monday. Mr. John Hare, one of our aged resident^, has been indisposed for some time. He is under the care of Dr. A. A. Mitchell and is slightly improved. Mrs. Ida Wilhelm was the guest of Mrs. Laura Henry on Friday last. ———o------------- BECKLEYSVILLE. Miss Mabel Stifler was the week-end guest of Miss Matrona Henry. Mr. and Mrs. William Henry entertained on Sunday last Messrs. Samuel Pattison, Russell Miller, Charles Baub-litz and Misses Goldie Hare and Mabel Stifler. Miss Hilda Bowen was the guest of Miss Matrona Henry on Saturday. ----------o---------- ROCKLAND. Lieutenant and Mrs. George Garrett, of Chester, Pa., spent Sunday wi-th Mr. and Mrs. M. L. Garrett. Miss Catherine Peddicord, of Hagers-town, is visjiting her aunt, Mrs. McCaffrey. Mrs. M. J(. Smyth, who has been ill, is much improved. * Mrs. Emily Wilhelm is ill at her home. IContinued on Page 3.) Mr. Ruff gave a most interesting talk and all present enjoyed it. Mr. John Phillipps is ill with la grippe. Miss Sadie Reiblich has been as far as the porch after having been ill and confined to her room for the past three weeks. Mr. Oliver Sauter is again able to be out after an attack of la grippe. Mr. and Mrs. Louis Kalb and little Miss Elsie Kal-b, spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Reinhold and family. Mr. S. D. Boss and son. Elmer, of Washington, D. C, spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrsl C. E. Upton. Miss Esther Schaible entertained quite a number of her friends at the home of her parents on last Wednesday evening. -------------O------------- WHITE HALL. The s^ale of the personal effects of the late Miss Hattie McBride, who was found frozen to death a few weeks ago on her farm near Hereford, was held last Monday afternoon, and while the list of personal property was small, a large crowd attended the auction and good prices were received. Tables brought as much as $68.00; chairs from $7 to $9. A bed-spread, woven in 1842, was sold for $11.00. A buggy bought 25 years ago and used but twice brought $39.00 The bidding was unusually lively and the result was a surprise to those in charge of it. The White Hall National Bank had a very successful year in 1919. At the close of business on December 31. the resources wer $685,458.58; as against $521,510.43 in 1918, a gain of $163,-948.15. The deposits increased from $427,843.30 to $566,202.34, a %ain of $138,359.04. The depositors number 1384. ..an increase of 200. An annual dividend of 6 per cent. was paid for 1919. The former board of directors were re-elected and organized by electing S. W. Black, president; A. L. Anderson, vice-president; C. Evans Wiley, rashier.
