March 6, 1920—Page 4 THE JEFFERSONL\N, TOWSON, MARYLAND. THE JEFFERSONIAN . TOWSON, MARYIiAND. Entered a» second -clams matter at the Postoffice at Baltimore, Maryland. Telephone—Tonioi 280. Published every Saturday at Towson, Baltimore County, Maryland, by The Baltimore County Jeffernonlan Publishing Company, Incorporated. OFFICERS. W. Gill Smith Elmer R. Haile, President. Secretary. Wm. J. Peach, Martin J. O'Hara, Vice-President. Treasurer. BOARD OF DIRECTORS John M. Dennis William J. Peach, Martin J. O'Hara, W. Gill Smith, Carvllle D. Benson, Elmer R. Haile, Logie Bonnett LOGIE BONNETT, Editor and Manager SATURDAY, MARCH 6, 1920 AN UNJUSTIFIABLE RECOMMENDA- L^H TION. The action of the Taxpayers' League in favoring legislation to "oust" the present Board of County Commissioners after they have served two years of their four-year term is, it seems to us, carrying the economy program a little too far. We cannot believe that the resolution upon the subject, which was passed by a slight majority of the forty ;or fifty gentlemen who attended the meeting at the Court House on Tuesday, correctly represents the attitude of the six hundred or more taxpayers whose names are enrolled in the League's membership, and yet the action taken Tuesday, by perhaps only one-twelfth of the total membership, is heralded throughout the County as action of the League. Why should a public servant be treated differently from a private servant? j| ^ If a farmer employed a hand for the period of four years, and then later, for his own advantage and not because of any inefficiency on the hand's part, "fired" him at the end of two years, he would be guilty of a breach of contract that would not only be contrary to law but alsp contrary to the generally accepted principles of decency and fair play. When a man offers himself as a 'candidate for public office, for a definite term at a fixed salary, and is elected by the people, a contract is completed between the public, as employer, and the office-holder, as employee, which ought to be observed with the same degree of good faith as a contract between private persons. We submit, with all due respect to the Taxpayers' League, that their action in recommending legislation to oust the County Commissioners before the expiration of the term for which they were elected is indefensible, from the public, standpoint, and is unworthy of favorable consideration by our representatives in the General Assembly. It would amount to a clear perversion of the principle of the "square deal" in politics, which was so ably championed in his lifetime by the late President Roosevelt, and which is generally recognized and observed by the better element in both of the great political parties. « If the County should adopt the proposed new Charter, and thus change its whole system of government, as it has the right to do under legislation passed before the present Board of Commissioners were elected, the curtailment of their term, in order to put the Charter into effect, might be justifiable, but we can see no justification, legal or otherwise, for attempting to curtail the term of the Commissioners in the manner proposed by the Taxpayers' League. There is one consolation at least, and that is that a smile is not included in the income tax schedule. NEW ADVERTISEMENTS. NEW ADVERTISEMENTS. WANTED. A GARDNER.
