S. Department of Agriculture, Maryland has prospects for 171,-000 more barrels of apples and 87,000 more bushels of peaches this fall than lasit year," according to the July 15 report in. fruit conditions issued by S. B. Shaw, secretary of the Maryland State Horticultural Society in cooperation with the University of Maryland Bx-tensdon Service and the Bureau of Crop Estimates, Department of Agriculture. The prospects for the apple crop in the State have improved decidedly since the June forecast and the estimated yield for this fall is 397,000 barrels. Reports received from the counties indicate particularly large crops of York Imperials and Ben Davis varieties and almost without exception the fruit is said to be free from disease an" in fine growing condition. Maryland growers, however, will have sharp competition in marketing their crops from other apple growing sections in the east. The State of New York is leading the country in prospects for a bumper crop and it is estimated that 6,494,020 barrels of apples; will be picked from the orchards in the Empire State this fall. Pennsylvania also is expected to produce a crop almost double that of last year and Virgini ahas prospects for more than 2,000,000 barrels: The big increase in the East, however, is largely offset by the setback in the large apple producing states if the West. In the State of Washington alone the forecast yield will be more than 2,000,000 barrel short of the 1919 crop and in Idaho, Colorado and Indiana large reductiins are noted. The forecasted peach crop for Maryland is 818,000 bushels. Leaf curl and brown rot is reported from some of the counties but generally the predictions* are favorable. "Virginia, West Virginia and North Carolina will show big increases over last year in their peach shipment while Georgia and California the two leading peach growing spates, will show considerable lossies. Up to July 3, early fruits and vegetables shipped from Marland indicated substantial increases in productiin over last year. The State shipped 763 cars of strawberries, 152 cars more than 1919. White potatoes from other points than the Eastern Shore filled 83 cars as against 25 up to the same time last year. Mixed vegetables' amounted to 88 cars this year while up to the same time last year but 11 cars had been shipped . The state bank of Peyton, Col., was held up and robbed of $8,000 by two men who locked the assistant cashier and a customer in the vault and escaped in an automobile with the money. Incomplete reports from the Atlantic fleet on target practice conducted last month off the Virginia capes indicate that "surprisingly good" results were attained, it was said by Navy Department officials. Secretary Baker issued instructions prohibitng any person in the military service from taking any active part in political campaigns or using his official position to influence the result of an election. Elihu Root, former American secretary of state, formally presented to the British people the St. Gaudens statue of Lincoln in Sanning Square as a gift from America. Francisco Villa, bandit leader, surrendered after an all-night conference with Gen. Eugenie Martinez, commanding the Torreon military zone. Rinald Amundsen, Norwegian explorer, arrived in Nome from the Arctic Ocean, and will return to the Polar regions for a five-months trip. A surplus stock of 2,385,000 pounds of zinc was offered for sale by the Navy Department under sealed bids to be opened August 4. Judge Nathan L. Miller, of Syracuse, was nominated for governor of New York by the unofficial 'Republican convention. Stt REGJSTERE.D "£&V "<£.
