THE JEFFERSONIAN, TOWSON, MARYLAND. September 18, 1920—Page 5 SALES AND LEGAL NOTICES. Editor The Jeffersonian:— After reading- Senator Harding's speeches I am not surprised at his campaign committee trying to confine his efforts to the front porch; am surprised they did not try to confine him in the third-story back room. I am convinced that his not replying to over a thousand roll calls was not any desire on his part to shirk his Senatorial duties, but rather to the sagacity of Penrose & Co. He informed the farmer he does not need and must not expect any favors of the government; further on he believes the farmers, should be assisted by giving them a greater number of offices. How that could only help the recipient of the office is beyond my comprehension. Then he takes care of the farming interests in his protective tariff, which will induce the manufacturer to sell his goods, which he cannot induce us poor home farmers to buy, to our competitors fifty or more per cent, cheaper than we are compelled to pay. The foreign farmers already have the advantage of much cheaper labor. We are paying from thirty-five to fifty per cent, more for our fertilizers, labor and machinery this year than we paid last year. What will we pay under Harding's protective tariff? Harding and Coolidge are now hedging on the "League of Nations," thrown their separate peace with Germany in the discard and trying to make the public forget they ever entertained any such ideas. Governor Coolidge in his speech of acceptance, informs his colored brethren that they should have every advantage that the white man enjoys. This means that the colored voter shall hold many important offices under their administration, providing th,ey are elected. I agree with him as, eliminate the colored vote, they could not possibly be elected. Senator Harding threw quite a damper on his colored friends, who paid a pilgrimage to his Front Porch, singing hymn's in which Harding's name predominated, and .praying for deliverance of race segregation in federal offices. &c, promising 200,000 votes for Harding and Coolidge. He told them to be good, go home and vote the Republican ticket and he would give their grievances due consideration. It must have been pathetic to watch their return home. After reading column upon column that the Baltmore American is devoting to the criticism of Governor Cox's mode of campaign, the following lines suggest themselves, with apologies to Pope: , "Such political astuteness never was seen, Casually read, it tickled our spleen. Carefully pondered, as its effect we trace, We damn, we envy and would gladly embrace." Yours very truly, DALL WORTHNGTON. ------------?------------ Cox hits straight from the shoulder and talks to the hearts as wel as the minds' of his hearers. Roosevet puts himsef on friendy terms with his audiences and talks a language they all can understand as easily as they can understand Governor Cox. Senator Harding shifts from one foot to the other and changes his mind as often as he changes his shirt. What he says is less like a speech than a political shimmy. LOST.
