(By Nancy Hanks) Many things influence the selection of a plan for your home. Here are some: First, the location of your property, its size and value. Second, the number of people in your family, the climatic conditions of your locality, the available materials at hand with which to build. Third, the limits of your purse. In selecting a plan for your home don't be influenced too much by style. Even though Spanish Mission, Dutch Colonial or English cottages are in vogue it is no indication one of these may yield the only home suitable to your needs. When you study home plans remember that simplicity, compactness, serviceability are the essentials of a well-planned home. You want maximum conveniences and comforts within minimum space in order to save money. S. COCKEYSVILLE, MD. vices are far more important in planning your home than accessories or frills and fancies. Homes are growing smaller, not only because of present-day building costs, but for the further and no less important reason that they are easier to maintain and keep up. Compactness is the present-day rule. This does not mean your home needs to be dull or dreary. It does mean, however, that planning of a smaller home, to eliminate waste and provide all the conveniences most peo-plea demand, is not a job for an amateur planner. When it comes to the type of house that may give you the most for your money, you should keep in mind that, even though bungalows are popular, yet compared with the convenience, comforts and floor areas of story and one-half homes*, bungalows are more expensive to build. This is not an argument against the bungalow as a type. It merely illustrates what you must keep in mind in home planning, if your purse is limited and you desire to make your dollars buy the most for the money. You cannot afford to build even a small home without first providing yourself with the most complete drawings, specifications, quantity survey and contract forms available, is possible. Anything else may spell disaster and waste of money for you Taking chances on sketchy plans is like trying to beat a railroad train at a crossing. You may get hit hard, and if you do it may wreck you— at least your purse. A good set of plans more than offsets their small initial cost through the savings they make. They give you complete and independent control of your building operation. They permit you to buy your own mater- ials. They eliminate guess work, arguments, delays and extras. Don't make the mistake of selecting your plans a week or two in advance of your building operation. Get them early. Study them. You will find it a great source of satisfaction, and in addition, you will lear nmany things not generally known by most people who for the first time approach a building operation. WHY THE TELEPHONE COMPANY ADVERTISES Sometimes the question is asked, "Since telephones are to be found everywhere and everybody uses telephone service, why does the Telephone Company advertise?** Here is our answer: Tele* phone service is personal service; it is the most personal of all public services. Through its army of employees the Telephone Company is in constant direct contact with those it serves. Such a contact could not possibly yield the best results without the heartiest co< operation of our patrons and this cooperation can only be obtained when there is a mutual understanding. We seek to bring about this understanding through our advertising in which we inform our patrons about our business; explain how our regulations, methods and practices are designed to help the service; tell of the closing dates of directories; announce proposed extensions of the system, new classes of service, and changes in existing classes;—in short, keep our patrons thoroughly posted in all of the matters that affect the Company's relations with them. In this way we seek to create in the minds of those we serve an understanding of our problems, confidence in our honesty of purpose, and faith in our aim to give the best service possible. All of these things are necessary to secure for us that measure of cooperation which we consider vital to the successful operation of our service. Released from the Baltimore City Jail 10 days ago by order of Judge Charles F. Stein, so he could spend Christmas with his family, J. Stuart Cottman, 27, was back in a cell at the Central Police Station the fore part of this week, after which he was committed to Spring Grove Asylum, Catonsville, for mental observation. Cottman, who gave his address as 5 West Biddle street, and who is prominent in social circles, was serving a six months' sentence in jail for operating an automobile when drunk, when members of his family and friends pleaded for his release from jail. Mrs. Clarence Cottman, the young man's mother, and his two brothers, Clarence and Llewellyn Cottman, went before Magistrate John Har-wood Stanford in Central Police Court and asked that J. Stuart Cottman be held by the police pending an examination into his mental condition.
