&\Lm§Y cruris u UU W fii mm Yes, it is true the horseshow is a thing of the past; the automobile shows and the aviation meets have superceded them; and the horse, for centuries mans' main dependance for transportation, has gone to the discard. Of course, in New York city and some other large cities they have annually what is called a horse show, and they are a great success for the purpose for which they are held—b u t everyone knows they are not held for the purpose of showing off horses. Charity balls are usually promoted by the same people who support the horse shows, but everv-one knows that sweet charity is not the real motive for the ball; both functions are but a means to an end; they are both social functions, and horses and charity are the excuses for the events. If the ladies were required to dress in calico gowns and sunbonnets as many of their grandmothers did when horses were man's main «m:k««":":~:mk0, and Bonny Lass, a descendant of the former, imported in 1740 were of pure Arabian stock and were responsible for a number of celebrated horses thereafter. It was said that immediately before and after the Revolution more than 300 thoroughbred horses were imported and owned by the colonists—these were interbred with the Spanish stock here and from this source came the American racer. Of course, the famous Clydesdale and Percheron strains were •HEADACHES MADE IN BALTIMORE EFFERVESCES EVERYWHERE introduced for heavy draught work. But the crowning glory of American horse breeding is the trotting horse. He is strictly an American product. Racing was a passion with the Southern gentry and Virginia and Kentucky especially were famous all the world over for their production of running horses. Almost every hamlet in those two States had its race track and many of the wealthy gentlemen farmers had their private tracks upon which they trained and speeded their own horses or ran against their neighbors. Maryland was not far behind these States in its interest in horses and so it was that every section had its races and its horse shows. When Dexter made the mile trotting record over 50 years ago of 2.40 it was supposed even by great horsemen that the limit had about been reached and it was the ambition of every farmer boy to own a horse that could trot a mile in 3 minutes and for years after the Civil War this county was crowded with horses that could trot in 3 minutes, except on a track, and this reminds us of a story of a Jewish horseman who sold a horse guaranteed to go a mile in 6 minutes. The purchaser gave him a trial with a skillful driver and the best he could get out of him was 4 minutes, .so he came WILLIAM WHITNEY County Surveyor For Baltimore County COURT HOUSE. TOWSON. MD. . The dealer replied: "What's your hurry, couldn't you vait a minute?" Indeed, in the old days almost every public gathering in the county was a horse show. The public auctions drew great crowds and gave every opportunity for swaps and sales and the horses were groomed with the intention on the part of th^ owner to show him off to the best advantage. The valley of Virginia held its great horse sales on court days in the spring and places like Staunton and Harris-sonburg brought buyers from all Shoes of Comfort and Style For Men, Women and Children THE TOWSON SHOE STORE York and Joppa Roads TOWSON, MD. Horses were brought lo the sale from quite a distance and court days in March was synonomous with horse market. The sales amounted to many thousands of dollars. How everything has changed since that period. Funerals are conducted 20 miles from the city and often there will not be a horse-drawn vehicle in attendance. The work of the horse is now confined to the race tracks and to the farms, and with the tractor coming into such. •x^x^x^x^x^x^x^x^x^x^x^x***^ Established 1895 Oil Permanent Wave Twenty Curls $15.00 Hairdressing, Shampooing Marcel Waving, Massage, Hair Switches made of your combings Address I ? ? ? ? ? t I 42 W.
