It makes no difference if the young woman who was tarred and feathered was of questionable character or not, for there are legal means which could have been exercised in her case. If the Ku Klux had been involved the deed would have assumed a vastly different aspect, but it was due solely to inherent human meanness and hypocrisy. No doubt these "puritans" of Frederick county wended their Travel on the railroads has been made safe to a remarkable degree, because of the improvement in equipment and roadbeds, and the training of personnel. Travel on the streets and highways can likewise be made safe if every automobile; owner will make it his first duty to see that his car is driven with the caution that public safety demands. When it is realized that 70 per cent, of crossing accidents occur in daylight, that 63 per cent, are in the open country where approaching trains can easily be seen, and that the majority are at crossings with which' drivers are way to church on Sunday, and very familiar—it is plain that the we hope they heard the story of the woman taken in adultry and who was not ordered to be tarred and feathered, but told by the Savior to go out and sin no more. Taking the law into their own hands leads any man or woman straight into trouble. With all the badness that has been raked up and piled against her, in the sight of the Almighty the victim of these infuriated "puritans" is cleaner than those that laid hands on her in the name of virtue. A NEW RICHMOND IN THE FIELD. LOGIE BONNETT, Editor and Manager SATURDAY, AUGUST 2, 1924. ROAD VANDALS. The County Commissioners and the Roads Engineer are doing everything in their power to construct and maintain good roads in the county. It requires a certain length of time to harden before it is in condition to stand the traffic, hence barriers are placed! across the roads and the traffic diverted until in the judgment of the Engineer it is safe to use it. Now it may happen that some people think their judgment is better than the Engineer's, but since the taxpayers' pay him a salary to represent them in the matter they will accept his judgment and act on it. The White Hall road has just; been extensively repaired and would have been opened to the public just as soon as it dried out United States Senator Robert Lafollette of Wisconsin, is an Independent candidate for President. His running mate has not yet been named. Senator Lafollette is one of the ablest men in public life today. He is bold, independent and fearless, and no matter what stand he takes in politics his party in his State is behind him almost to a man. In politics he has always been a Republican, but for years past he has been a most aggressive progressive, and has trained with Roosevelt, Borah, Johnson and others of the progressive wing of the party. He was an. ardent supporter of Roosevelt against Taft, which resulted in the election of President Wilson, and in that election Taft received only wo votes west of the Mississippi River. The Republicans west of the Mississippi are progressives and when they get started look out for them. In this campaign Lafollette will make great inroads on the regular Republican ticket throughout the west and number of crossing accidentts can be greatly reduced if automobile drivers will not attempt to cross the tracks until they are sure that it is absolutely safe to cross. JURY FOR SEPTEMBER TERM OF COURT DRAWN. sufficiently, and as usual a barrier was placed across it and a'northwest and will make several detour provided A couple of those smart Alecs to be found unfortunately in every neighborhood, took the law into their own hands, removed the barrier and drove on the road. They were suspected and watched, did it again and brought io Towson. After a severe lee tare by State's Attorney Jenifer they were released. The Jeffersonian calls attention to the matter for the benefit of others ir the county who may be tempted to do as these men did, and warn them that they had bet ter not attempt it, for the next offender will not get off with a lecture alone. SHAME ON THESE "PURITANS." The decency that Maryland has enjoyed for years was shattered by the tar and feathering of a young woman by a "she" gang of men led by a "he" woman in Frederick county. If Frederick county and the State is not to be branded as the hitherto certain Republican States here in the East at least doubtful. The Senator will not draw from the Democratic vote. A great deal that he stands for the Democratic party stands for. He will carry some Republican States besides his own and help to make the election certain for Davis and Bryan. ! Tenth district-Henry Smith. -Wm. T. The automobile, one of the most useful inventions since the steam engine, has introduced a new hazard in our streets and highways. While the records show that only a small proportion of automobile accidents occur at railroad crossings, and that this proportion is diminishing, the unnecessary and preventable loss of life at crossings is a cause of deep concern to railroad managements.
