TEN YEARS AGO WORLD WAR STARTED, WITH EUROPE A MAD-HOUSE AND AMERICA CALM Austria, Assured Germany Was Standing Back Of Her, Opened Fire On Belgrade—Slavs Stirred By Action And Kaiser Moved Against Russia. Baltimore county, like the rest of the State and nation, was at fever's pitch; ten years ago the first of this week, for the World War actually RIDERWOOD GARAGE T. E. COCKEY, Prop. RIDERWOOD, MD. Many another war had started there only to be extinguished without involving this country in any way. For days it was thought the big "powers" of Europe would not permit the fighting to become general. The old diplomacy was having its fling. The wires were humming between St. Petersburg and Berlin, and Vienna and London, and Paris and Rome. Old hatreds were £aned into flames. Led, or misled, by their statesmen the peoples of half a dozen countries were parading and declaring for war. It came. The most destructive of human history. Five years and more have passed now since hostilities ceased, but the peace has not yet been established. The scars and the after-war loneli- fixed July 30, that hope of fled. Then the rattle. The war became in the end a "war to end war," but the unrest continues. The Russia that was has been wiped from the map. Germany, which ten years ago was proudly seizing the sword, is virtually the ward of the world. Austria' was smashed beyond self-help and has had to lean heavily upon the League of Nations. France still is crying out for revenge and protection. England and the United States are burdened with what would have been thought ruinous debts ten years ago. Yet many of the tragic events that led up to the catastrophe have been lost to memory. Historians have 1914, as the time peace in Europe sabers began to seeking vengeance for the assination of her Crown Prince, was bombarding Belgrade, but there was no return fire. Berlin said that it was an affair for Austria to settle. Berlin also said she would stand by Austria. The Serbs could not stand the strain. St. Petersburg said war was inevitable and started to mobilize. The Kaiser gave the Russians 24 hours in which to stop. Germany and France moved toward mobilization. The British fleet sailed under sealed orders^ A great crowd'gathered at the Palace in Berlin. The Kaiser appeared at a window to acknowledge the demonstration of 50,000 persons. "War would demand of us enormous sacrifices in property and life," he said, "but we should show our foes what it means to provoke Germany, and now I commend you all to God. Go to church, kneel before God and pray to Him to help our gallant army." By August 1 the censorship had closed in on Europe and the United lilBHIiillllillllflllilllHIBBHIIIIB X ? States hegan frantic efforts to get its 100,0,00 tourists out of the possible theaters of war. Russia sent no reply to the Kaiser's demand for her explanation for mobilizing her forces. The Stock Exchange in New York was closed. The small nations of Europe scrambled into mobilization to maintain their "neutrality." Paris sent out official word that she was calm. On August 2 came the crash. Germany declared war on Russia. German patrols near the Russian border were fired upon. France was electrified into action. France was in alliance with Russia. Great Britain was the third member of the Entente, but there was much opposition in England to her participating in the war. The Kaiser signed his general mobilization order and the German war machine which was to surprise the world rolled into action. Poincare, who has just laid down the reins in France, ordered the French mobilization, but insisted France was not yet at war. Germany seized Luxembourg, the neutral state between them and Paris There was no surcease after that. Next day Germany demanded free passage through Belgium in order ' to attack France. Germany was striking on two fronts. She hoped I to subdue France quickly. Russia I was thought to be her strongest foe. I August 3 Germany declared war on France. Belgium fought to maintain her neutrality and held the Germans in check long enough for France to get her guns ready. With the invasion of Belgium, Great Britain declared war on Germany. The death grapple that was to last nearly four years and a half had begun. . .or was it ended until the United States threw her strength on the side of the Allies after nearly three years of frightful hostilities. Yet there are plenty of statesmen who say today l;he world has learned nothing; that there will be another war when the devastating effects of the last one have worn a little more away. MT.
