Uncle Wiggily's Adventures Com/right, 1924, Try The McClure Newspaper Syndicate. Trade-Mark Registered. IN MAKING SALT WATER TAFFY, UNCLE W1GGILY NEARLY WENT DAFFY. BUT HE SAVED NURSE JANE FROM THE BAD CHAPS' BANE. THEN THEY ALL HAD A GOOD LAUGHY. Text by HOWARD R. GARIS Author of the Famous UNCLE W1GG1LY BEDTIME STORIES Pictured by LANG CAMPBELL 1. Once when Uncle Wiggily and Nurse Jane were at the seashore, the muskrat lady housekeeper ate some salt water taffy. "Oh, this is delicious!" she cried. "I'll make you a lot more," promised the bunny. Over a fire on the beach he boiled sugar and molasses together to make the salt water taffy. Along came Mr. Twistytail. "That smells lovely!" he sniffed. "It will taste good, too!" said Uncle Wiggily. 2. "What are you going to do?" grunted Mr. Twistytail, as he saw Uncle Wiggily set the kettle of candy off the fire. "Don't throw that taffy into the sea!" The bunny, laughing, said: "No danger of that! I'm going to pull the salt water taffy into sticks!" When the taffy was cool, Uncle Wiggily pulled a long rope of it from the kettle. Mr. Twistytail fed his little pigs some extra chunks of the sweet stuff. 3. "You will have to help me pull this salt water taffy into sticks, Mr. Twistytail," said Uncle Wiggily. "There is too much of it f6r me to handle alone." They found a pole on the beach, and the two friends began to stretch the candy to cool and harden it. "Oh, aren't you just too happy for anything?" grunted one little pig. "I certainly am!" squealed the other. "It's just like Christmas! Oh, you candy!" 4. While Uncle Wiggily and his friends were happy at the candy pull, farther down the beach the Walrus and the Sea Urchin were planning to make trouble. "1 know how we can catch Uncle Wiggily," said the Unchin. "How ?" grunted the Walrus. "We'll capture Nurse Jane, put her on a raft and Uncle Wiggily will come after her," said the Urchin, "When he follows, we'll get him and nibble his ears!" 5. At another part of the beach Nurse Jane Fuzzy Wuzzy was in bathing with Mrs. Twistytail. The ladies were having fun in the water. "Oh, I'm so hungry!" grunted the lady pig. "Uncle Wiggily told me he would make some taffy," spoke,Nurse Jane. "We'll find him and get something to eat." By this time the Walrus and Sea Urchin had launched their raft "Now to capture Nurse Jane," said the bad chaps. 6. All of a sudden, when Nurse Jane and Mrs. Twistytail weren't 16oking, the Walrus and the Sea Urchin pushed their* raft close to- the ladies. "All aboard!" barked the Walrus, and he and the Urchin pulled Miss Fuzzy Wuzzy out of the water. "We'll sail away with her and make Uncle Wiggily come after her! Then we'll get him!" howled the Urchin. "Oh, please let Nurse Jane go!" squealed Mrs. Twistytail. L*» 7. Away sailed the Walrus and the Sea Urchin with poor Nurse Jane. "Save me! Save me!" begged the muskrat lady. Mrs. Twistytail ran to where Uncle Wiggily was pulling candy. "Look!" squealed the lady pig. The bad chaps have Nurse Jane!" The bunny had just made a long, strong rope of the salt water taffy—such as the cowboys use. "I'll lasso the raft and the bad chaps, too!" cried Uncle Wiggily. '8. "Whizz!" Uncle Wiggily sent'his taffy lasso sailing through the air. The loop fell over the Walrus and Urchin and the bunny pulled them from the raft into the water. "Ha! Ha!" laughed Mr. Twistytail. "you caught them, Uncle Wiggily! They didn't get you!" The pig gentleman waded out and pulled Nurse Jane to shore on the raft. "1 am not done with you bad chaps yet," said Uncle Wiggily. *. Before the Walrus and the Sea Urchin could help themselves, Uncle Wiggily bound them with candy ropes to the taffy pole, and left them. "Is there any taffy left?" asked Mrs. Twistytail. "Salt water bathing makes me hungrv." There was plenty of taffy, and she and Nurse Jane ate some as they sat on the beach while Uncle Wiggily did a ring around the rosie dance with Mr. Twistytail and the little pigs. And if the ice pick doesn't tickle the strawberry short cake when it tries to bide away from the lunch table, the next pictures and itory will be about UNCLE WIGGILY GOING TO SCHOOL. ryland State Archives mdsa_sc34iO_i_8i-oi72.
