Wehner, last of the "Suicide Club" of the old Fifth Louisiana Infantry of the Confederate Army, and the shell of the first submarine. Built by the Confederacy in New Orleans in the closing days of the Civil War, it was to be used in a last attempt to break the Yankee blockade. A one-man affair worked by.hand power paddles, its purpose was to get as near an enemy ship as possible, when a sight would be taken, the manhole closed, the sub sunk and then to grope its way to the side of the ship and be blown up—together with its victim. The plan was never carried out and the sub was sunk in Lake Pont chart rain. It is set up in the grounds of the Confederate Veterans Home near the spot where it had rested so many years. United
