Judg ing from the enthusiasm displayed at their September 8 th meeting many improvements are expected to take place during the coming year. Among the many matters discussed was that of telephone rates and service: An increase in rates was vigorously protested. Several complaints of especially bad service; were discussed. There was one) point, however, that might be scored in favor of the telephone company. That developed upon a man investigating the reason for getting a "line busy" report when trying to phone to his home, which was on a four-party line. It was found that some of the ladies on four-party lines conversed for 20 or 30 minutes at a time, and of course the telephone operator would have been criticized severely had she disconnected the line at the end of the usual three minutes allotted to an ordinary telephone call. ----------o---------- REOPENING OF EPWORTH M. E. CHURCH POSTPONED. The reopening of the Epworth M. E. Church which was to take place tomorrow (Sunday) has been postponed until Sunday, September 28. A program is being arranged for an all-day service at that time. ----------o---------- MISS IDA M. HELD QUITS TEACHING FORCE. Miss Ida M. Held has resigned as principal of the Baynesville Public School, and has retired from teaching. She has a fine record for work in her profession. ----------o---------- BENJAMIN STANSFIELD TO CELEBRATE 79TH BIRTHDAY. Benjamin Stansfield, a well-known resident of the Fourth district, will celebrate his 79th birthday today (Saturday). He recalls that in 1877 on June 15th corn was frostbitten. Ruhland applied for an absolute divorce from Mrs. Lauretta May Ruhland in the Circuit Court at Towson upon the alleged ground of infidelity. The bill states that the parties were married March 28, 1914, and that they have one daughter, now about 5 years old. The husband claims to have discovered his wife's misconduct on,1 June 7, 1924. The defendant is now said to reside at 23 4 Fifth avenue, Lansdowne. Attorney W. Harrison Chambers appears for the plaintiff. ----------o------------- COUNTY NOW HAS 80 ELECTION PRECINCTS. CORBETT COUPLE RETURN FROM TRIP TO NIAGARA. Mr. and Mrs. Harry O. Macalister, of Corbett, recently returned from a delightful trip to Niagara Falls. ENGAGEMENT ANNOUNCED. Perkins, Chicago iron manufacturer, visited relatives at Towson this week. His company had the contract for installing machinery in the new Baltimore & Ohio Railroad elevator at Locust Point. ELECTED GRAND CONDUCTOR OF MASONS. Warren S. Seipp, son of Col. Geo. Seipp, Court Crier at Towson, vice-president of the Title Guarantee and Trust Company and Grand Master of Masons in the Maryland Jurisdiction, has been elected grand principal conductor of the work of the General Grand Council of Royal and Select Masters of the United States. His election was at the triennial convocation of the order in Portland, Maine. BIRD MIGRATION MYSTERY. Great flocks of birds rising in regular formation remind the farmers and vacationists that the North will soon be no place for delicate constitutions. The annual rush of travel southward is beginning in) birdland. It is one of the constant and abiding mysteries of nature that the majority of wild birds migrate seasonably, with almost the regularity of the earth's revolutions. There are variations, to be sure, but they are the more mystifying, for they appear to give evidence of a foreknowledge of the weather. -^ Just why the birds shu^. >:o South when there is no lack of food to be had in the Northern fields is a puzzle to those naturalists who believe migration is a question of food supply. In the tropics there is food aplenty. Having reached Central America or Brazil, therefore, why should the Northern birds ever return to the cold climate from which they flee every autumn? It cannot be food alone that drives them irresistibly northward in the spring and southward in the fall, for they leave a land of plenty in the South in the spring and a Northern land still overflowing with bird food in. the fall. Possibly the future may reveal many of the secrets of nature, but until mankind is able to read the minds of bird folk it is not likely that science will be able wholly to explain the great mystery of migration. The engagement of Miss Etta O'Toole daughter of Mrs. James F. O'Toole, of Baltimore City, to Mr. James J. Lindsay, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. James J. Lindsay, of Towson, has been announced.
