And yet we are a long way from the days when all mothers will seriously and prayerfully stately their own weaknesses and their children's and teach them unselfishness, sacrifice and old-fashioned goodness instead of the love of pleasure and dress. Life may do it. But Mother won't.- Mother is too much afraid of their sulks, their tears, their protests. She washes Dorothy's best dress', and presses it in a July kitchen at ¦! o'clock in the afternoon. She walks to the garage and has a long talk with trie manager and opens her shabby little purse and settles with him so that Billy's father will never know thai the hoy did what he did with a borrowed car. Her own anxious concern is that they shall not be bored, disappointed, deprived of anything they want. And as a consequence nine times out of ten, she loses their affections and respect. And she loses her children. But you good mothers who cannot do all you, would for your children (who cannot do even what you think necessary) take comfort from this: That they miss ERECTED IN LOUDON PARK — BY— F. J SCHAEFFER. If they learn to give up their own way, to be unselfish and obedient and self-resourceful while they are only babies, they have received a start in life that nothing can ever take away from them. The happy and successful thirties and forties depend upon their little years. When youth is gone and her marriage is made for better or worse, and daddy and mother are no longer behind her to comfort her, comes the real test of your little girl's character. If she is unselfish then, simple enough to still find pleasure in a three-day trip to the city, an unexpected theatre-party, a picnic, a hook, a garden, if she is riot going to waste any time or bitterness on the fact that her brother's car is handsomer than hers, or that her sister has a larger house, but simply and sweetly go on living and loving and serving everybody about her, then you have given her—by that old nursery training—her life You have given her happiness. the raset thing in the world. Children need love, as they need sunshine and clean air. But make it real love. Love that is tender, but firm; love that is strong enough to hurt them when they need pruning or straightening. Think before you say "yes" whether it is really that little soul you are helping or whether a subtle form of maternal jealousy has entered in; whether it isn't really that you want Dorothy to be able to do what the children of much richer people do to save Dorothy's pride. Take the children into your confidence where their pleasures are concerned; tell them where the money goes, and what you can afford and approve, and what INSURANCE Tn nil its Ttranches WHEELER & COLE FRANK 1. Say that you are glad the opportunity to test their courage and endurance has come, and that it is exactly like a dose of medicine for them. Whatever we Americans do to harden them, our children have far too easy a time. Don't be afraid of saying "no" to them now while your "no" counts. Don't be afraid of their little sulks and protests. Do what you will, they are going to cry and want more—with never a word of thanks. Pray that they will know sacrifice, renunciation, need, suffering, sharing, serving, and emerge some day secure in sunshine of the only real happiness, as real men and real women. The files of the Advocate show(| that the Baltimore and Towson Railway ran its first cars on the York Road as far, as Govanstown on Thursday, July 16, 1863, sixty-one years ago. An account of it, which was a matter off great interest to the people at that time will be interesting to this generation, who go to the city in automobiles and electric cars. It is as follows: "The Baltimore and Towson-town Passenger Railway.—This road has bee^.. completed to Govanstown, aim Ve cars will commence running tomorrow morning, Thursday, between that place and the city. They will run daily (Sundays excepted) as follows: Leave the corne rof East and Elisor streets at 8. 10 and 12 A. M. and 2, 4 and 6 P. The great draft riots in New York City, beginning on July 33, take considerable space in the papers; a dispatch of that date said: "A large mob collected today at the Conscription Office, on Third Avenue, to prevent the draft being carried on. At this hour (11 A. M.) they have driven away the Conscription Officer, set the building on fire and a whole block is now in flames. The mob will not allow the fire bells' to be rung, nor the firemen to act. They have destroyed all th etelegraph wires in the vicinity, and are bent on mischi°f. Some of the regulars from Governor's Island have been sent io the scene. A later dispatch on that day said: "The riot is said to have assumed vast proportions. It is stated that the Arsenal, Fifty-fourth street, has been taken possession of by the mob. who have armed some four hundred of their number. "The policemen have been handled terribly. It is reported that Superintendent Kennedy and some fifteen policemen have been killed, and many wounded. "Squads of some thirty soldiers who were ordered to fire on the mob, had their guns taken away, and were shockingly beai-en by the mob and dispersed. 4 Speaking of Investments If you could buy a share or two of stock that would pay you 30% and was fairly safe, wouldn't you ? | A garage in your back 3Tard is absolutely safe and will pay yon that much more. Remember the old swimming hole, the wild adventures in caves and woods, the thrills of catching your first fish? Your nature still wants to play hooky once in a while. It's easy too. Easier than it was in your schooldays. Plan your work ahead so you can take a day off. Hop in the car bright and early. Go off for a day's golf or hunting or better yet take the wife and family along for an outing in the autumn woods. Forget your business for just a few hours. You'll work all the better next day. Your vision will be clearer, your mind keener. Your point of view will "be changed. And you will find it restful to get out on the road on a week day when there is less traffic. Better run 'round tonight to the nearest "Standard" pump and fill her up with gas, oil, air, and water. Then you'll be ready for an early start and a steady run. "Standard" is1 just the gas you need on early morning trips like these for there may be a touch of frost in the air. That's when you need peppy gas. • • STANDARD OIL COMPANY (New Jersey) STANDARD4* GASOLINE © Maryland State Archives mdsa_sc3410_1_81-0245.jpg
