Newsg-ravnre Section, THE JEFFERSONIAN, Towson, Md., October 18, 1924. ANNAPOLIS ONE OP MARYLAND'S OLDEST CITIES. There is a live-wire chamber of commerce and an active Rotary club. Both of these organizations are constantly on the alert, seizing every opportunity to 'further the interests of the citizens in a progressive way. The Annapolis-Claiborne ferry, which connects the Eastern and Western Shores of Maryland by regular ferry service, has its western terminus at Annapolis. The ferry adds to the importance of Annapolis as a connecting link between large and important agricultural sections of the State. I bridge over the Severn River, meeting the Baltimore-Annapolis Boulevard on the north and its connecting link to Annapolis on the south, has just been opened to traffic by the Maryland State Roads Commission. The bridge is 1,827 feet long. Construction required more than two years, and. its cost was over $800,000. There are 27 spans, each 65 feet long, and a 75-foot cantilever draw. Annapolis is within two hours' automobile drive from Washington or Baltimore over excellent roads. The roads of Maryland are known everywhere for their general excellence, ' and Anne Arundel County has a liberal share of this splendid system. The Washington, Baltimore and Annapolis Electric Railroad Company operates fast electric trains on a half-hourly schedule to Annapolis, from both Washington and Baltimore. Anne Arundel County is a famous trucking section, and Annapolis derives a considerable part of its business and wealth from the nearby farms. The most important truck crops grown in the county are strawberries, watermelons, canteloupes, tomatoes, peas and sweet potatoes. Anne Arundel County supplies the major portion of the demand for these crops in Baltimore and Washington. The fact that the county is pierced by excellent roads and by the Washington, Baltimore and Annapolis Electric Railroad makes quick delivery of the crops possible. The southern portion of the county is adapted to the growing of corn, wheat, tobacco, and other staple crops. One of the chief points of interest in Annapolis is the United, States Naval Academy, where future officers of the United States Navy receive their training. Annapolis is known familiarly throughout the Navy as "Crabtown." The Naval Academy is the finest and largest naval school inj the world. It occupies a mag nificent site on the Severn River, j facing the bay. The Naval Academy reservation comprises about two hundred acres of beautiful lawn and park. The vicinity of Annapolis is fast becoming a Mecca for loverls of outdoor life. The Severn River is undoubtedly a beautiful stream, and has been called the "Hudson of the South." It is said that the first white man to see the hills of the Severn was Captain John Smith, who, in 1608, made his celebrated voyage up the Chesapeake Bay as far as the Patapsco River. The high, healthful banks of the Severn make ideal sites for summer homes, and both sides of the river are lined with handsome residences. Hundreds of persons from Washington and Baltimore make their summer homes near Annapolis. Chief among the summer colonies on the Severn are Sherwood Forest, Severna Park and Round Bay. thing door s The ing, b ready cours tennis fact t are on! train Washil attracj Reg] operatl the sui ccursl the opportunity to combine a trip to Annapolis with an ideal boat ride on the Chesapeake Bay and the Severn River. Lovers of the antique can find endless pleasure in rambling about the streets of -Annapolis, bearing such names as "Queen" and "Duke of Gloucester." On every hand one sees relics-of colonial days. Ancient knockers adorn the doors of colonial style, with their fan windows and iron balustrades. The old houses themselves are well preserved reminders of other days. There are several, churches in Annapolis built of bricks brought from England in the early days,.jand the inscriptions on the stones in the churchyards give interesting sidelights on early colonial life. The casual visitor to the city is immediately impressed with its air of antiquity and its quaint beauty. It is unusual and refreshing, in these days of commercialism, to find the important business center of a large area content to pursue its affairs without encroaching upon and obliterating the traces of its early days.
