Jr6l In the Baltimore County Advocate ot August 12, 186 4, are the following news items: "Practical Emancipation.—On last Wednesday Capt Joshua Marsh, of the :10th district, of this county, manumitted 21 slaves, every one that he owned. He had previously given those their freedom who were able to earn their own living, the young ones of which their are some STRAINING THE ETES Trying to read, write or sew without classes impairs the vision and sometimes causes headache. "Death of a Valued Citizen.—We regret to learn of the death of Adam Denmead, EsqM well known as an extensive iron founder and machinist of this city. He died last night, the disease which caused his death being typhoid fever." The- following is a dispatch from General Grant on his movement towards Richmond: "Bermuda Hundred, August 14— Yesterday (the 13th inst.) the Second Corps, (Hancock's) were going of transports at City Point all day, apparently for Washington, and actually started down the river, the bands playing gaily. Of course, the rebs were watching from the shore, and no doubt felt much interest in the movement. The transports did certainly go down the river for ten miles or more, when however, they suddenly put about under cover of darkness arid returned, coming tip by this place under full speed at 10 o'clock P. M., and proceeded up the river. At the same time the 10th Corps with the artillery of the Second Corps, were crossing to the nor,th side of James river, and they were <~x«X"X"X~X"X~xk~x~x~X"X~x* Do You Want Individuality m In Your Jewelry? 5 : s Then See The Only Art School ¦ Graduate Jeweler in Baltimore m Z ! This force, with General Foster's, makes quite a respectable army. It is understood that their first move will be to destroy, if possible, the rebed pontoon bridges above Fort Darling. If this is done, Lee would be unable to cross his army to. the north side without marching-by way of Manchester, more than twenty miles. Thus far all works well." After nearly four "years of cruel war the following poem entitled "A Prayer for Peace" no doubt appealed to the millions of the period of which we write: Great God! who art enthroned on high Above this world of care, List to a suffering people's cry, Oh! hear a nation's prayer! O grant that peace once more may reign !s lK9 - In this distracted land! Accept our secrificial slain, And stay thy wrathful hand! Thou know'st how many a gallant heart This cruel war has taken! Let all who in defeat depart In victory awaken! And grant that though the traitor's knife Slay all our brave and true, That peace which saves our nation's life May save its honor too! And show these wicked men who seek Their country's overthrow, Whose hands with brother's blood do reek, Whose hearts with guilt do glow. Thy mercy is as frse as air. As rich as pricelss gems; Yet though thy mercy may spare, Thy justice all condemn! Establish, Lord, as fixed as fate, The Union of our land! Oh, make it lasting, strong, and great, With thy Almighty hand! And when our flag shall float above Each Union-martyr's grave, For ever bless with peace and love The land theye died to save! The following is a war story by President Lincoln in September, 1864: "It is related of President Lincoln that recently a farmer applied to him to secure his assistance in collecting a bill against the government for damages done by troops passing through his premises. The President referred him to the proper officer, whose duty it was to attend to such matters. But the man was anxious that Mr. Lincoln should examine the case personally, and give an order to have it settled. 'Then,' said he, 'they will attend to it at once: otherwise I may have to wait a long time.' 'But I have no leisure (Continued on Page 8) ^m^m><^«xk«x^x»»>«^x~x»«:»«xk»*x»4 WILLIAM WHITNEY County Surveyor For Baltimore County COURT HOUSE, TOWSON. MD.
