| OLD KME STUFF — WHAT OUR DADDIES AND GRAND-DADDIES DID 60 YEARS AGO IN BALTIMORE CO. (Continued from Page 8) Ninth..........226 Tenth......, Eleventh . . . . Twelfth..... Thirteenth . . Majority for Constitution .......... 132 The editor of the American is very much elated over the adoption of the Constitution as the following editorial shows: 226 231 95 92 156 196 253 174 56 61 2001 1869 1869 Get the most out of your cattle and poultry by feeding Rivcrdale Feed for Cattle and Arcady Feed for Poultry. Charles St. Phone Vernon 4966 "The Constitution Adopted.—The soldiers in the field proved themselves no less determined against the enemy in the rear, than they were against the rebels in ' front. Their vote has saved the new Constitution from defeat and placed our State in a noble attitude before the world; the singular unanimity of the soldiers in their votes in favor of the new charter is in striking contrast with that infamous course of conduct recommended and adopted by renegades from the Union cause, who recommended to the traitors and sympathizers in our midst, to perjure themselves by taking the oath required by the new Constitution that they had never given aid of comfort to the rebels. "To say nothing of the well known secessionists in our vicinity who have thus perjured themselves in the presence of high Heaven, look at the vote of St. Mary's county, which was almost unanimous against the act, notwithstanding there is probably not one hundred men in the whole county that has not been deeply engaged in rendering aid to the cause of the rebels, either by shipping goods to them or by sending their sons and brothers into the field, who have returned to pillage and destroy the people of their State and their property. A reckoning will in due time be made of these unprincipled wretches and their aiders and abettors." The following news item appeared on October 21, 1864: "Improvements in Towsontown.—Our village for some years has not been marked for improvements; one, however, is now going on that is substantial and necessary. Trinity Church (Episcopal) at this place,: in charge of the Rev. Mr. Hoff, is having put up on their lot a substantial wooden shed on the north side of the church and are having the whole lot nearly paled in. The funds for the purpose are the receipts of two concerts given during the last summer in the Court House at this place. Mr. Samuel F. Butler of this place, has the improvements in hand, which is a sure guarantee that it will be properly done." There is an important notice in this week's issue, viz: "On and after Monday, May 23rd, 1864, a car will leave Towsontown at 6 o'clock A. M., and corner of Bast and Ensor Streets at 11 P. M., until further notice.—-A. D. Sanks, Agent." Up to this time the last car leaving Baltimore was at 7.15 P. M., and Mr. Joseph B. Perkins was not a patron of the road at that time either. The following will not only be interesting to the Masonic fraternity but to others:. — "The Mason's Grave—In all ages the bodies of the Masonic dead have been laid in graves dug due East and West, with their faces toward the East. This practice has been borrowed from them and adopted by others, until it has become nearly universal. It implies that when the Great Day shall come, and He who is Death's conqueror shall give the signal His ineffable light shall be first seen in the East; that from the East He will make His glorious approach; will stand at the eastern margin of these graves, and with His mighty power—that grasp irresistibly strong which shall prevail—will raise the bodies which are slumbering therein. We shall have been long buried, long decayed. Friends, relatives, yea, our own nearest and dearest, will cease to remember where they have laid us. The broad earth will have undergone wonderous changes —mmountains leveled, valleys filled. The seasons will have chased each other in many a fruitful round.— Oceans, lashed into fury by gales of today will tomorrow have sunk like a spoiled child to their slumber. Broad trees, with bordered roots, will have interlocked them, hard and knobbed as they are, above our ashes, as if to conceal the very fact of our having lived; and then, after centuries of life, they too will h|'ve followed our example of mortality, and long struggling with decay, at last will have toppled down to join their remains with ours, thus obliterating the last poor testimony5 that man has ever lain there. So shall we be lost to human sight. But the Eve of God, nevertheless, will mark the spot, green with the everlasting verdure of faith, and when the trumpets blast shall shake the hills to their very bases, our astonished bodies will rise, impelled upward by an irresistible iinpulse, and we shall stand face to face with our Redeemer.."
