MARYLAND "APPLE WEEK" OVERLOOKED IN WEEK THAT PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION WAS SETTLED "An Apple A Day Keeps The Doctor Away" Was Slogan Decided Upon, But Never Used—Season To Be Put Over Big Next Year. » During the excitement of the National and State elections many persons have overlooked the fact that it was Apple Week. It has never been made clear by the promoters of Apple Week to what special use ^:«kk-x-x-x-x«:-x«x-x-x-xk«x«x^xk^x^xk^x-x-xkkk-xk-x- Agents for "All Leather" "Red Goose" Shoes Expert Shoe Repairing TOWSON SHOE STORE York and Joppa Roads, TOWSON, MARYLAND •*? X^X«X^XKKKK-X^X^X^XKKK-X-X-X^X-X«X^X-XKKKK^X-X»*X*t apples should be put during the six days of celebration; and it should not beforgotten that apples may be used extensively for cooking or for eating raw. Moreover, there are many other uses to which apples may be put, which today are only whispered about in polite circles. We can mention above a whisper such by-products as cider and vinegar—but some of the old timers remember the days when apple jack or "Jersey Lightning" as they affectionately called apple brandy, was a potent medium fo softening some of the rigors of a cold winter day. Then too, large quantities of fruit nowadays are dried in evaporators and exported. But these things are beside the subject, if we accept the slogan of the Apple Week projectors: "An apple a day keeps the doctor away." Perhaps this is true—but is it an incentive to the doctors to observe such a week? We guess not—and there are a lot of doctors about, too! The apple is truly a fruit for the seven ages of man. The boy thinks of it in terms of eating until there "ain't no core." The youth likees to give Grandpa a large rosy Been Davis, for example, and let its juice transform him into an arch recon-teur, and he will tell you more tales about Blaady Angle and the Battle of Gettysburg, than Marshal Foch could tell about the Western front— provided the marshal is not eating an apple too! The bald-headed man of forty falls an easy prey to the spell of the apple, et his jaws crunch into the luscious juice of a Yellow Bellflower, for instance, and lie can sell ice to an Eskimo! In Baltimore county citizens of as many ages, sizes and shapes as the children who follow the Pied Piper of Memelin, glory in the potential^ ities of the Winesap, the juice of which must have prompted our forefathers to be the first to sign the Federal Constitution. TWO HURT FATALLY IN FREDERICK ROAD AUTOMOBILE SMASH-UP B. W. Lego Dies As Result Of Being Hurled From Machine— Accident Occurs Between Catonsville And Ellicott City. Thrown from a speeding automobile, which is said to have turned over several times on the Frederick road before it nally came to a stop, Berkert W. Lego, 3309 Elm avenue, Baltimore city, received injuries which caused his death at St. Agnes' Hospital. Two other men in the same accident are reported in serious condition at the hospital. A fourth man escaped injury. Lego is said to have been the owner and driver of the automobile which caused his death. The other occupants, Thomas J. Curtis, 3036 Cedar avenue, and Clarence Crabson, 3238 Cedar avenue, are at the hospital, while Louis Rice, 3353 Chestnut avenue, escaped injury. The accident occurred between Catonsville and Ellicott City. Lizzie Hammond, colored, told the police, they say, that the machine was traveling a fast rate of speed. A short time before, Nathaniel Reid, colored, 20 Norris street, Baltimore city, was crushed to death TOWSON MASONS ATTEND CHURCH SERVICE. TYDINGS CONDEMNS BUREAUCRACY. WHEN James Evans, of Franklin, Pa., discovered the world's best lubricating Oil in his backyard well, in 1859, pandemonium broke loose. Almost at the same time, both illuminating and lubricating Oil had been found in unfathomed abundance. It can readily be imagined that the whole population of Franklin "went crazy" over the wonderful find. Business, school, housekeeping—everything was forgotten in the mad rush to see the well. And the mad rush was not confined to Franklin; all over the world the thought of vast wealth from a hole in the ground was capturing the hearts of the adventurous. *l That night a young man stopped at the Evans home. Miss Anna Evans, one of the blacksmith's daughters, met him at the door and cried: "Dad's struck ile!" The expression caught the popular fancy, was printed everywhere, and it will go down as an immortal characteristic of the early days of Oil. Nowadays when a Kerosene buyer first tries The Red C Oil or The White C Oil, same except in color, he knows that he has "struck ile" better than he ever knew existed. It is beyond question the satisfactory, economical Kerosene you have been looking for, for your Lamps, Stoves and Incubators The Red C Oil The White C Oil The tendency cyf Cngress to restrict the States in the regulation of their internal affairs bv transferring thir powers to the National Government was condemned by Millard E. Tydings, Representative from the Second Maryland district, in an address before members of the Sisterhood and Brotherhood of Eutaw Place Temple at Temple Center, Eutaw Place and Lanvale street, Baltimore city. Other speakers were Moses Wies-enfeld, president of the brotherhood; Leonard Hecht, Mrs. Joseph Wiesen-feld and Frank R. Kent. During the last session of Congress Mr. Tydings said, more than 200 amendments to the National Constitution were proposed. Many of them were similar in character, he said, but they were all directed toward centralization of government. The proposed Child Labor amendment was cited by Mr. Tydings as an illustration of interference with State's rights. He stated that if the people substitute Federal bureaucracy for natural parentage they will be creating a possible agency for tearing down the structure of Government. The people are interested in reducing taxes, Mr. Tydings said, but if the National Government continues creating bureaus to spend money, tax reduction is impossible. Tax reduction, he asserted, itself is not nearly so imourtant as to stop the thing that makes high taxes. Mt. Moriah Lodge of Masons attended services last Sunday morning at Trinity P. E. Church at Tow-son. Rev. Henry B. Lee, Jr., the rector, preached. when he was pinned under an automobile truck laden with building material, which toppled into a gul-ley beside the Sulphur Springs road, at Arbutus. ----------*. —------- SPEAKS AT TEMPLE MEETING. Until six months ago she had been cook in the house of a Helsingfors burger ever since she was a young girl. Then, at 35 years of age, the monotony of the dull routine of cooking, washing dishes, sweeping and cleaning began to pall. Anna decided she must make a change. She had read sea stories and the romance and dangers of the sea appealed to her. She decided to go sailing. Due to her sex she had a hard time finding a berth, but finally induced Capt. Alexander Lija, of the Eros, to ship her as stewardess. This is her third trip and despite the fact that she has to cook for 22 men, and is the only woman aboard the ship, Anna likes the life. In fact she declared that the rest of her life would be spent on the "bounding main." She said she likes "the sound of the waves beating against the bow" and that there is nothing in a landlubberly existence to compare with it. >.»«>»>^>.>*>»_M>.>.>«>.>*>«>»>»>»iM> Towson Radiator & Welding Works We Recharge and Repair Batteries Batteries Recharged 75c and $1.00 PHILCO BATTERIES SA!
