g> §>&®s>m§ ©eg) <§® Yg(a0§ &t§® u(?g mi ^L^7UIS)TY H. L-B ,te.tb,e; issue.;.of the Baltimore County. American of November 4th, 1864', there is a proclamation of Governor Bradford declaring - th6 adoption! of the Constitution by the vote of the people. The official figures given in the proclamation are: For its adoption, 30,174; against its adoption, 29,799—a majority for the Constitution of 375, a remarkably close vote. The following items are taken from the paper of that date: Qujeer Monument.—A monument recently erected to fee >%netnory of Henry Harris, of Williamsport, Pa., is that of a colt in the act of kicking him in the bowels. The following is the inscription: "Sacred to the memory of Henry Harris, borne June 27, '31, of Henry Harris, and Jane, his wife.—Died on the fourth of May, 18 37, by a kick of a colt in the bowels, peacable and quiet, a friend to his father and mother, and respected by all who knew him, and went to the world where horses won't kick, where sorrow and weeping is no more." Rich and Poor.—"Ma," said an inquisitive little girl, "will rich and poor people live together when they go to heaven?" . "Yes, my dear, they will be all alike there." "Then ma, why don't rich and' poor Christians associate together here?" The rich mother did not answer. The election, National, State and county, took place on November 8, 1864. The American of the 11th Do You Want Individuality ii In Your Jewelry? Then See The Only Art School Graduate Jeweler in Baltimore Anton Horvat gives the results. It was exceeding- ' ly close. General McClellan received 26 62 votes for President; Lincoln 2576. For State Senator John Philpot, Union, received 2629; Robert R. | Boarman, Democrat, 2575. For Judge of Circuit Court, Grason 2601; .Ridgely 2552. The editor was very much morti-! fied that President Lincoln did not carry the county and says: I "It is true we have the mortifi-, cation of having been beaten by a i small majority at home, when everything that earth could bring to bear was put into play to defeat the Union candidates, treachey base and damnable, in the Union ranks caused our defeat at home." The election of Judge Richard Grason, grandfather of Mr. C. Gus Grason of the county bar, was also a great blow to the editor, as he had made a special effort for the Union candidate, Mr. James L. Ridgely, and he said of it:' "The loss of a loyal Judge in the person of James L. Ridgely is peculiarly mortifying." The following entitled the "Covetous Man's Decalogue," taken from the American of November 18, 1864, was probably quite old when it was published at that time. The decalogue is still the guide of many at this day. It will probably meet with the approval of the profiteers of today: 1. Thou shalt have no other God but the almighty dollar. Thou shalt bow down to it, and reverently worship it. 2. In six days thou shall work (Continued on Page 5) WILLIAM WHITNEY County Surveyor For Baltimore County COURT HOUSE. TOWSON, MD. TalapkoM.
