OLD TIME STUFF—WHAT OUR DADDIES AND GRAND-DADDIES DID 60 YEARS AGO IN BALTIMORE COUNTY.

"Batchelorism Versus Matrimony. —The following contrast of batchelorism and matrimony is doubtless the production of some ill-natured fellow who has received 'No' for an answer. It is quite clever in its way, though a little too rough, perhaps, on the divine institution: "The poor batchelor, indeed!—Who is petted to death by the ladies with marriageable daughters? Invited to tea and evening parties, and told to drop in just when it is convenient? The batchelor. Who lives in clover all his days, and when he dies has flowers strewii on his grave by the girls who could nor entrap him? The batchelor. Who strewes flowers on the married man's grave? His widow? Not a bit of it; she pulls down the tombstone that a six weeks' grief has set up in her heart, and goes and gets married again—she does. Who goes to bjed because time hangs heavy on his hands? The married man. Who gets- a scolding for picking out the softest part of the bed, and for waking up the baby when he turns out in the morning? The married man. Who has wood to split, house-hunting and marketing to do, the young ones to wash and the lazy servants to look after? The married man. Who is arrested for whipping his wife? The married man. Who gets divorced The married man. Finally, who has the scriptures in his side? The batch-"elor. St. Paul knew what he was talking about when he said: 'He that marries does well; but he that marries not does better.' "
Sabbath, was as religiously kept on Sunday last in Towsontown. as has been any Sabbath day for years The usual quiet prevailed here, and naught except the tinkling of sleigh bells made it appear different from the ordinary * Sabbath. Service was held in the various churches, and all passed off in a manner delightful, no doubt, to the most devout Christian.—Monday however, being considered "Christmas," young America wa sout in full strength on that day, powder by the pound was exploded; from early dawn until bed time there was one continual roar. Neighbors exchanged congratulations with each other. Egg-nogg, appletoddy, &c, flowed like water; adults (some at least) imbibed right freely; so that taking all together, Christmas Day just passed, loses nothing by com-
parison with other days of the kind in Towsontown."
We begin now with January 1st, 1865, and for this entire year wel will take our information from the Maryland Journal. This, by the way, is the first number of that paper issued and we give as the first item the first editorial signed by its editor, the late William H. Ruby, who until his death was prominent in everything affecting the growth and
