best interests of the county. At the same time the first issue of the Baltimore County Union appeared. It was the successor to the "Advocate and American. The publishers of the new paper were L. M.Haverstick and Messrs. H. Clay and John B. Longnecker:
"To the Public.—With this number we commence the publication of the 'Maryland Journal.' In establishing an enterprise like this, at this time, we feel the weight of the responsibility which rests upon us. We conceive it unnecessary to give a lengthy list of promises—we had rather let the public judge of our merits as we perform our duty.— With an experience of twenty years in our business, (thirteen years of which has been spent in Baltimore County), we feel that we understand the tastes and wishes of the citizens of this county, and shall labor assiduously to make our sheet a welcome messenger in every household which it may visit. It shall be the vehicle of intelligence and useful information, and we promise that we shall use our utmost endeavors to
merit the confidence and support of the public.
"Since we have resided in Baltimore county, we have made the acquaintance of hosts of valued friends. All, we ask is—-that'each' one^-wili make a personal effort in behalf of our enterprise, and we will feel satisfied with the result.
We have put the subscription price at one dollar and fifty cents per annum, in advance, which, we
