Everybody seemed to have some money to. spend and good natured tolerance was everywhere in evidence.
Everyone seemed to have the spirit of Old Schooge after his dream of the Christmas past and the Christmas present.
Spiritually, the day began at midnight, when midnight mass was held in all Catholic Churches of the county. Soft lights streamed out into the mist through stained glass windows—deep tones of the organs and joyous voices of choirs proclaimed a Saviour born on earth. The perfume of incense and the sweet strains of "Adeste Pidelis" recalled Christmas of other years.
In the Protestant churches early Christmas morning services opened the day. Peace and good will was the topic of sermons to overflowing congregations.
Charitable agencies were active, supplying clothes and food to hundreds of needy. Hospitals, asylums, the Poor House and county jail were not forgotten, for gifts and good things to eat were generously provided for the unfortunate.
