| THE JEFFERSONIAN, TOWSON, MARYLAND Saturday, April 5, 1924—Page 9 COAL PRICES TO FALL, SAY COUNTY DEALERS—HOPE OF HEAVY CONSUMPTION IN EARLY SPRING ABANDONED For One Hundred And Twenty-One Days Mine Operators Awaited Advent Of "Old Man Winter," But Critter Came Only For Week-End Visits. Notwithstanding the fact that the first of April, "April Fool's Day," came in with the most severe snow storm of the year, it is the most cruel month of all for the coal man. For 121 days mine operators awaited the advent of Old Man Winter, due to arrive on or about Decem- TELBPHONE OO. AND STREET RAILWAY LIKELY TO SEEK RAISE IN RATES. Increases in the rates charged the public in this community as the price of improvements already sought, or of wage advances already made, are expected to be asked of the Public Service Commission by two public utilities. These are: The United Railways, which is prepared to extend the single fare to the city limits, as warmly demanded by several outlying communities on condition that the commission approve an advance in the fare. It is understood that iy2 cents is being discussed. The Chesapeake & Potomac Telephone Company, whose request will not be made for several weeks, but which will announce its hope of improving certain exchanges if an increase in the "flat rate" service is allowed. None of the companies' spokesmen is willing to speak of the forthcoming representations to the Public Service Commission as a "demand for an increase." It is admitted, however, that there is under consideration in eeach of the groups a plan for pointing out to the commission that an increase may be forced upon the company unless some other way is found, either to increase gross revenue or reduce operating expenses. None of them indicates any expectation that such a way will be found. DR. MARTIN P. SLOAN HEADS TUBERCULOSIS ASSN. Dr. Martin F. But the old fellow came this way for flying week-end trips only. Until April hove in sight there was always a hope the snow would begin in the gloaming. But now, not a chance. The operators looked over stocks on hand. They had enough anthracite to fill all the coal cars between Kokomo and Tegucigalpa. They had enough of bituminous to drive a coal burning dirigible from Towson to the end of the rainbow. They were licked and they admitted it. Baltimore county dealers relayed the glad* word to an expectant public: "Tell father to take the coal out of his safe-deposit box and put his oil-stock back, if he wants to. The price of coal is going to fall. How much, we don't know. But the change that's coming is going to be decidedly for the better." March only added a breath of spring to the long list of softening influences that were already felt in the court of King Coal. Persistently "unseasonable" weather brought a light retail demand in other places besides this county. Curtailment of production is said to be a universal tendency in all producing centers. Big buyers have ceased making contracts. The Baltimore conference between miners and operators will not affect prices here, according to local dealers. The parties now attempting to reach an agreement represent the Virginia coal fields, from which Baltimore draws none of its supply. CHEVROLET SALES SERVICE RIDERWOOO- MD. All business was suspended one afternoon recently at Owings Mills and the townspeople turned out to witness the demonstration and test of the first fire engine to be acquired by the Owings Mills Volunteer Fire Department, of which Capt. Joshua Harvey is president and William King captain. ( The apparatus arrived the fore part of the week and is an American La France triple combination engine of 72-horsepower and cost about $12,000. The company organized about 18 months ago under the presidency of Douglas P. Campbell. It numbers about 150 members, 50 of whom are active and the remainder honorary. Though formerly owning no apparatus, the men have responded to all community alarms and rendered excellent service as a bucket brigade, salvaging contents of burning buildings. MRS. KATHERINE MASON SEEKS ABSOLUTE DIVORCE FROM HUBBY. Sparrows Point for the purpose of visiting her sister in Baltimore and upon her return found her husband in company with Emma F. Kattel, whereupon the latter beat a hasty retreat. The bill states that the parties were married December 25, 1909, and that they have three children, whose legal custody the mother seeks. The husband is said to be employed at the Bethlehem Ship Building Plant at Sparrows Point, where he earns a weekly salary of $50, and that he also has a substantial deposit in the Sparrows Point Bank. Judge William H. Harlan passed an order upon the bill enjoining the bank from paying out any portion of the deposit until further order of the court. FORMER HALEHTROPE WOMAN GUESTS OF FRIENDS THERE. Mrs. Katherine Mason, through Charles W. Main and Albert K. Weyer, attorneys, filed a bill in the Circuit Court at. Towson against William H.
