| THE JEFFERSONIAN, TOWSON, MARYLAND Saturday, March 15, 1924r-Page 9 RECORDS DISCLOSE FACT THAT FADS OF PRESENT-DAY "FLAPPER" ARE OLD AS EGYPT Ivories With Black Dots Show Follies Of Men Were Also In Evidence In The Long Ago—Women Used Many Aids To Beauty. OOOMDGE ASKS TO* HAVE NAME ON G. O. P."BALLOT. (By Nancy Hanks) The young woman of today may go in for the clay pack, modern hin-ses and all the other beautifiers, but she must not imagine she is particularly modern, for she isn't—but merely carrying on the traditions of thousands of years. "Flappers" of today have nothing on their sisters of the pre-Christian area, both in the Roman and earlier in the Greek civilization and in some respects in the early Egyptian days, for they knew all about eyebrow pencils and rouge pots, mirrors, hair pins, water waves, beauty patches and all sorts of jewelry. Ancient records disclose this fact. But let no one suppose that only the vanities of women are parennial. Some of the follies of men were in evidence a few thousand yars ago, if the picture of the well-known ivories with the little black dots mentioned may be taken as evidence of from a set of knitting needles to a tunic blouse with kimono sleeves was illustrated by some object used by the Egyptians, the Greeks or the Romans. While the records failed to show that ice tickets were used by the early Greeks, it was noted that men today kno wlittle more about "temperatures" than the Greeks, who managed the business of cooling the wine by pouring it through a pierced colander filled with snow. (From the Annapolis Representative of The Jeffersonian.) The certificate of application by President Coolidge to have his name printed upon the official ballot of the Republican party in the Maryland primary election in Maryland, May 5, as filed at Annapolis this week with Secretary of State E. Brooke Lee. The official paper was brought to Annapolis by one of the secretaries to Senator O. E. Weller, and was accompanied by a letter from enator Weller describing its contents. It was accompanied by a check for $270, the filing fee. SUNDAY EVENING SERVICES INSTITUTED AT PIKESVILLE. 20 YEARS AND $5000 FINES FOR TWO DOLLINGS OFFICIALS. an evening's diversion in classic days. The socks described might well have been made from Red Cross specifications, if it were not that in those days the men wore sandals and so provision had to be made for the great toe, much as we knit the thumb on a mitten. What corresponded to a daily paper, a public billboard with want ads and a lost-and-found column, hot-air heating, excellent systems of plumbing with pipes which kept the water flowing in a spiral movement, thus avoiding the deposit of sediment, and the identical type of joint used by the plumber of today, were commonplaces of the early Roman civilization. And that is not all; even the late unpleasantness over the Teapot Dome would have been "old stuff" to the Greeks who had words over some oil lands in Mesopotamia, while our Carthaginian neighbors were even modern enough to try prohibition. In the realm of cooking, even hash —good, old utilitarian, boarding-house hash—is no invention of modern times, if we are to judge from the ancient chopping knives, shaped exactly like the one mother used to use in the big wooden chopping bowl when she whacked up the apples for1 the mincemeat. The whole science of dietetics on which moderns pride themselves is not so few, for the Roman doctors prescribed just about the kind of diet which the best dietitians of today favor. The modern stenographer is as old as Cicero's secretary, who took down his words with a system of dots and dashes, and the newspaper cartoonist of today could well afford to study the series of caricatures which some ancient sculptor doubtless perpetrated to josh the actors and politicians of his day. Almost every phase of modern life (Special to The Jeffersonian) William G. Benham and Dwight Harrison, officials of the former R. L. Dollings Company, who were tried in United States Court at Columbus, Ohio, on charges of having used the mails to defraud in connection with activities of the company, were each sentenced to 20 years in Leavenworth AUTO AMD TRUCK COLLIDE. | Federal Penitentiary and to fine of $5000 by Judge J. ----------o---------- PATRONS' CLUB ORGANIZED RESIDENTS OF ARBUTUS. pay a Sater. BY The residents of Arbutus, near Halethorpe, have organized a Patrons' Club and elected the following officers: President, Mrs. Frederick Schaub; vice-president, Mrs. C. Brown; recording secretary, Mrs. L. Behlert; acting secretary, Mrs. Harry Roeper, and treasurer, Mrs. John Peipe. Miss Charlotte Wilcox, social worker for the Children's Aid Society of Baltimore, delivered an address. An Essex coach, the property of Mr. Rowe, connected with the Black & Decker Mfg. Co., was in compact with a motor truck during the snow storm on Tuesday at the corner of the York Road and Pennsylvania avenue, and naturally, the "little bus" got the worst of it. ----------o---------- ONE OF GREATEST BARYTONES TO SING AT OVERLEA INSTITUTION. The first of a series of Sunday evening Lenten discussion groups was held on Sunday last at St. Mark's-on-the-Hill Protestant Episcopal Church, Pikesville, under leadership of the rector, the Rev. Rodger A. Walk. The prayerbook is the topic for discussion. A choir of 11 boys, trained by Prof. Charles Ranft, will sing in litany services at 5 o'clock each Friday during Lent. The mission study class of St. Mark's is to meet at 3 P. M. each Friday during Lent. ----------o---------- PARTY AND DANCE AT WILLOW SPRING CLUB. A CORRECTION. It was stated incorrectly in the last issue of The Jeffersonian that a Mr. Huer would in the near future take over the tinning and roofing business of Mr. John H. Bevans, Jr., at Towson. This was in error and The Jeffersonian regrets the mistake. Mr. Bevans will continue in business as heretofore. A party and dance was given recently in the Willow Spring Club room in honor of the birthday of Miss Helen Kastner and Mr. Andrew Kuhn. A delicious supper was served at 10.30 P. M. Music was furnished by Rosses Orchestra. About thirty guests were present and a most enjoyable evening was spent. Baltimore countians will have the opportunity of hearing one of the greatest barytones of the present day in Newcomer Hall, Overlea, Monday evening, March 24, when Joseph Schwarz, noted opera star, will give a concert there for the benefit of the Maryland School for the Blind. Schwarz' last appearance here was in the Chicago Opera company's presentation of "Tannhauser," in the Lyric, and those who heard him then will never forget his glorious singing of the "Evening Star" aria. Recently he sang in Washington with Mabel Garrison in the Washington Opera Company's presentation of "Tales of Hoffman." Needless to say he scored a decided triumph. ^^ FRANCIS C.
