| THE JEFFERSONIAN, TOWSON, MARYLAND Saturday, March 1, 1924—Page 5 ITCHING AND TICKLING ARISES FROM PRESSURE, SAYS PROMINENT COUNTY DOCTOR^ Two Sensations However, Are Quite Different—Appropriate - Method Is To Draw Pig's Bhistle Along ] Skin Of The Forearm. (By Nancy Hanks) Tickling arises from pressure— itching from the nerves of pain. At any rate this is the conclusion of some prominent Baltimore county doctors. An appropriate method whereby the sensation of tickling may be induced is to draw a pig's bristle along the skin .of the forearm. To excite the sensation of itching press a pointed bristle on the skin and maintain the pressure on one and the same spot. The two sensations are quite distinct. The mechanical stimulus exciting the sensation of itching can not be diminished much under half a gram, if it is to be effective, while sensation of tickling can be induced when the prressure is reduced even to one-twentieth of a gram. The tickling sensation, such as is produced by the bending of a hair or deformation i nthe region of a pressure spot, rapidly fades or subsides, a phenomenon characteristic of the terminations of pressure nerves. To maintain the sensation of tickling, the stimulus must be carried along the skin. For itching, however, the stimulus must be maintained at one and the same spot, and the sensation once induced remains for a long time at the affected spot. Different also are the after duration and the reflexes associated with the two sensations. The itching sensation in general outlasts the duration of the stimulus, which can hardly be said of tickling excited by week stimuli. The reflex associcated with itching is the scratch reflex, that with tickling is shuddering or even shivering, and not laughter as is so generally assumed. If the pain nerves be paralyzed, it can be shown that tickling is not due to excitation of these, for the sensation can be evoked after they are paralyzed. In spite of the distinctive characters of the two sensations, confusion and admixture are not infrequent, and long-continued titillation may give rise to results which are very complex and may be associated with the sensation of itching. Both sensations tend to extend beyond the spot stimulated, and both lead to reflex vascular effects. The physiological effects in both processes are not essentially different, and the psychological effect is chiefly dependent on the direction of the attention to the phenomena. If this is directed to the external stimulus, the sensation of contact arises, but if to the part tickled, the sensation of tickling arises. ATTENDS CHICAGO GATHERING. Clarence G. Cooper, superintendent of county schools, was in Chicago this week, where he attended the meeting of the Superintendents' Section of the National Educational Association. NEW ADVERTISEMENTS Roland R. Marehant, Attorney-at-Law, 1616 Mnnsey Bids.. Baltimore, Md. SALES AND LEGAL NOTICES. HOST TO LEGISLATORS SERIES OF DAIRYMEN'S MEETINGS ARRANGED RY COUNTY AGRICULTURAL AGENT. County Agent Rhode has planned for a series of dairymen's meetings for next week in all parts of the county. A one-day feed school will be conducted at each place. Mr. Conover, dairy specialist from the University of Maryland, will discuss feeding problems, using the black board to illustrate his talks. Mr. Oldenburg, extension agronomist, will tell about the growing of the crops of chief value to dairymen, especially legumes, which furnish the protein, the highest priced ingredient of dairy feeds. —, At each of these meetings a representative from the Baltimore City Board of Health and one from the Dairyman's Association will be present to explain the Board of Health's regulations in regard to the city's milk supply. Milk coming from Maryland farms has been showing a very high bacteria content and unless this condition is remedied is likely to be replaced by milk from other sections. It is very important for all parties concerned to cooperate in saving the Baltimore market for Maryland milk. Every dairyman is urged to attend one of these meetings, which will be held as follows: Glen Arm—I. O. O. F. hall, Monday afternoon and night, Feb. 25 th. Reisterstown — Franklin High School, Tuesday afternoon and night February 26th. Hampstead — Hampstead High School, Wednesdy morning and afternoon, February 27th. Maryland Line—K. of P. The United Railways and Electric Company will observe its twenty-fifth anniversary on Tuesday. The Company will mark the sixty-fifth anniversary of the first horse—car line in this community July 25th. At the time of the merger, in 18 9 9, there was the Consolidated Railway, which had already taken over the Baltimore Traction; the City and Suburban and the Lake Roland Elevated. Competing with the Consolidated were the Maryland Traction, the Baltimore and Northern and the Baltimore City Passenger Railway. With the United, after taking in these six big rival companies, came such powerful individual lines as the Central, of which the Preston street-Fulton avenue line was the nucleus. A number of suburban lines came into the merger inidvidually, such as the Sparrows Point line, the Gwynn Oak line, Curtis Bay Line, Gwynn's Falls Railway, the Ellicott Mills and the Elkridge lines. The Sparrows Point line carried as part of its title North Point, although it was not until 1903 that the Baltimore, Sparrows Point and Chesapeake Railway Company was formed to operate to Bay Shore Park. The most important subsidiary of the United is the Maryland Electric Railway Company, which chiefly holds eight car barns, the 25-acre tract known as Bay Shore Park and the Roland Park "boulevard" car line. The United pays this company a rental equivalent to 6 per cent, on the value of the Maryland property. ----------o---------- FEW QUESTIONAIRES RETURNED TO STATE GAME DEPARTMENT. ORDER NISI. The report states the amount of the same to be Four Thousand ($4000.00) Dollars. WILLIAM P. COLE, Clerk. True Copy—Test: WILLIAM P. COLE, Clerk. Mar. 1-8-15-22. SEALED PROPOSALS. Employment conditions in Baltimore and elsewhere throughout Maryland are generally good, according to a report issued by the United (Rates Department of Labor. What little unemployment is apparent is of a purely seasonal nature and indications point to the absorption of those out of work in the very near future. One of the principal reasons for this exceptionally excellent record is due to the large amount of industrial and residential construction work now in progress. Never before in the history of Baltimore has there been so much winter building as now is being witnessed. All industrial plants here are in full operation and give employment to thousands of men and women. The majority of the idle are unskilled workers, who have been thrown out of work during the last few days owing to -climatic condi tions. The State Game Department under date of February 1st, 1924, mailed to each and every hunter on record as having purchased a hunting license, a questionnaire Card, requesting information as to the amount and species of game killed by each hunter during the season of 1923-1924. The total number of cards mailed aggregated more than 62,000. However, up to the present time but 11,000 replies have been received. Instructions were given on each card for the hunter to fill in the blank spaces according to his kill, sign same with correct address and mail to the Department without any cost whatever. Every person hwo received a questionnaire should send in his answer whether he killed game or not. The purpose for receiving this information is to determine which parts of the State may need re--stocking and to find out how much game was killed during the past hunting season, in order to compare same with the amount killed during the season of 1922-23. No one need fear that tha questionnaire is designed to check up on violations of the bag limit laws. The information is sought for the benefit of the sportsmen in gen eral as well as for the Department. ----------o---------- CATONSVILLE RESIDENT BURIED AT MOUNT OLIVET.
