Equipment and Supplies For Contractors and Industrial Plants Provisions of a bill creating a metropolitan sanitary district in Baltimore county practically have been agreed upon by city and county officials, Abel Wolman, chief engineer of the State Department of Health, has announced. Mr. Wolman's announcement followed a meeting of officials in the office of Philip B. Perlman, City Solicitor. The bill to be placed involves the expenditure of $7,000,000 on water, sewerage and drainage in the metro-political area. Mr. Wolman said it had been agreed that the city woud furnish water from its mains. Special attention will be directed this year in the Better Homes in America campaign to the small house and how the family of modest income can get the most out of funds they can devote to building and making of the home. One of the greatest needs of the country is to interest architects in designing comfortable, livable houses which can be built or purchased for no more than $50 0(0. It is the expressed belief of experts connected with the Better Homes in America educational movement that many houses now costing considerably more than this figure could be duplicated for $5000 if the greatest care was taken in planning and ordering materials and in other ways. It has been estimated that in building the average house enough waste material is left over to furnish firewood for the house for two years. And this two year's firewood supply was not purchased at firewood prices, but at prices for finished lumber. The home winning first prize in the nation-wide Better Homes contest last year was planned, financed and furnished by students of the civics department of the high school at Port Huron, Mich., at a total of $5500. It is this type of home which will be stressed heavily in the campaign this year. The campaign this year has been put in charge of Dr. James Ford, Harvard professor and expert in housing and community organization, who has been given leave of absence by the university expressly to allow him to carry on this educationol work. Herbert Hoover, secretarry of Commerce, is president of Better Homes in America. PEDIGREED DOG IS WOUNDED. GOUCHER FACULTY GIVES SILVER BOWL TO PRESIDENT. Doctor and Mrs. William / W. Guth were presented a silver bowl by the faculty of Goucher College, which in the near future will locate at Towson, in recognition of the tenth anniversary of the inauguration of Dr. Guth as president of the institution they sent the following letter: "The year 1923 numbers among its departed days one that marked the tenth anniversary of your arrival in Baltimore to assume leadership in the life and work of Goucher College. The College, as represented by the board of administration and instruction, desires to express its appreciation of the service you have rendered to Goucher1 College in particular and to the cause of sound education for women in general. We are tying to express to you both in a very small way our good will, our loyalty and our affection." -----------o----------- NEW OIL ENGINE PROVES SUCCESSFUL. hem Shipbuilding Corporation at Sparrows Point proved a success on its initial trial down the bay. Installed on the Cubore, of the Ore Corporation fleet, during the past year, the engine was tried out on a run from Sparrows Point to Annapolisv Complete success attended the trial, engineers said. Bethlehem engineers are jubilant over the result. The new engine means a saving in fuel oil of more than 50 per cent., they said. Also it means that as the engines gain favor the Bethlehem plant at Sparrows Point will be the center of activity installing and building them. The first American designed marine oil engine operating on the Diesel principle of internal combustion perfected and built by the Bethle- RIDERWOOD- MD. Eighten dollars given at Christmas by an unidentified person to 18 teachers of the Methodist Church Sunday-schoK>l of Halethorpe, each receiving one dollar to "make money grow" for the benefit of the church building fund, increased to more than $37 during January. It is planned to double the $37 during February to $75. Each teacher used her original dollar in buying products and selling them. The building fund was still further increased by an entertainment I given Wednesday night in the Hale-! thorpe Theatre by the Baltimore & 1 Ohio Glee Club for the benefit of the church. iunattfflawtwmiagtHiwgaataiBCtfpiiuiigii^ A pedigreed St. Bernard dog probably will have to be killed as a result of being shot by Lewis Hart-man, 18 years old, St. Mary's avenue, Morrell Park, with a .22 caliber rifle, according to county police.
