Phones, Gilmor 3389-J Gilmor 5441 Since August, 1922, Notwithstanding Seasonal Fluctuations, Trend Has Been Upward—Prior To Christmas "Eats" For Average American Family Cost More Than Since March, 1922. CENTURY OF VEHICULAR PROGRESS RECORDED BY VALUABLE SPECIMENS. (From the Washington Correspondent of The Jeffersonian.) Food is more costly at the beginning of the new year than at' any previous time in the last twenty-four months, according to the National Industrial Conference Board, which has just completed an analysis of figures compiled by the Department of Labor. Within this period of two years, the Conference Board announces, food prices at one time (in March, 1922) declined the "peak" of 52 per cent, to 39 per cent, above the pre-war level, and this low range was maintained for about two months. There was another slight rise in prices but this was followed by a recession in August, 1922. Since August, 1922, the Conference Board says, the general trend of food prices has been upward, not- withstanding teasonal fluctuations Prior to the Christmas (1923) holidays, it is stated, food for the average American family cost more than at any other time since March, 1922. The cost of food began to ascend with the enactment of the Fordney-McCumber profiteers' tariff in September, 1922. While the consumer was thus forced to pay higher prices the producer of agricultural products—meats, poultry, grains, potatoes, etc.—has not profited by the increase. Much of the produce of American farms has been sold at prices below the cost of production at the very time that consumers were paying the highest prices they have had to meet since March, 1922. ?>xkk«*k~xk"X^ ITS NOT A HOME UNTIL IT'S PLANTED TOWSON NURSERIES, Inc. President Lincoln's carriage shows a decided improvement over the towering vehicle used by General Lafayette. Special historic value is attached to President Lincoln's carriage because it is the one used by him on the night he was assassinated. From the inclosed horse-drawn coaches of Presidents Grant and Harrison, the exhibits shift to the first vehicles of gasoline and electric propulsion. An early Studebaker electric car and many of the first gasoline motor vehicles, including the first Light-six, Special-six and Bix-six Studebaker cars, make up a more modern display. Spectacular indeed are two of the exhibits—the Studebaker gold chassis and the gold car. The gold chassis was first shown at the New York Automobile Show in 1916, while the gold car made its first appearance at the same exposition the year following. Typifying an altogether different aspect of early American development is the Canastota wagon or prairie schooner, built in 1830 by John Studebaker, father of the five Studebaker brothers who founded the house of Studebaker. It was used in 1838 by a MacMillan family to emigrate from York County, Pa., to Belmont County, Ohio. Two beautiful specimens of excellence in wagon construction are in the exhibit. The aluminum wagon, made of box rosewood and trimmed in aluminum required 422^ days labor to build. The name Studebaker has been linked with the development of transportation in the United States almost since the beginning. John Studebaker, father of the five brothers, bought property near Gettysburg, Pa., in 1830, and, with his sons, pursued the trade of blacksmith and wagon builder. In 1850 two of the sons, Henry and Clem, moved "Westward to South Bend, Indiana, and in 1852 laid the foundation of the present Studebaker Corporation. It was inevitable with the advent of the automobile in the late '90's that the company would become interested in this new method of transportation. As early as 1897 Studebaker built and experimented with a "horseless vehicle," and by 1902 was actually producing electric runabouts and trucks. The management entered into the manufacture of gasoline-propelled outomobiles on a large scale in 1910, acquiring the entire business, plants, essets and trade name of the Bver-ett-Metzger-Flanders Company, of Detroit. During its dramatic rise in the automobile industry Studebaker has established many records. One of the most remarkable of these was in 1921, when Studebaker enjoyed the biggest business in its history prior to 1922, notwithstanding that the total number of cars sold of all other makes except Ford, was 45 per cent, less than in 1920. Sales during 1922 surpassed 1921 by 65 per cent, and the record for 1922 was exceeded in the first eight months of 1923. ----------o---------- DEATH CLAIMS JAMES HENRY MOORE. Mention is often made when an auto is seen without a spare tire on the machine, that the owner is taking- a long- chance. To change a tire on the road is only a matter of a few minutes when you have a spare, but if you have to take it off and inflate it with a new tube, it is a long job, and lost time. If then a spare tire is necessary to the autoist, how much more necessary is a bank account with a good balance necessary to every one of us when times of financial stress are upon us. These times, unfortunately, come to all of us just as the flat tire comes occasionally. |Why not be prepared by opening1 your account HERE AND NOW ?
