GARIS UNCLE WIGGILY CRIED, WITH NURSE JANE AT HIS SIDE, Author of the Famous UNCLE WICOILY BEDTIME STORISi AND MANY QUEER THINGS HAPPENED ON THEIR RIDE. Pictured by LANG CAMPBELL 1. Once upon a time. Uncle Wiggily built himself a boat to sail over the ice. He made the ice boat from a wash tub and two sleds, with a sail which the wind could blow. "Allaboard, Nurse Jane!" called the bunny one day. "Oh, ho! Oh, ho! Ice-boating we shall go!" "Do you think anything will happen?" asked Nurse Jane, as the bunny helped her in. "We shall have some jolly fun," said Mr. Longears. ^4W 4. However the pig lady was too fat to be much hurt by the bump of an ice boat. She just bounced into the wash tub like a rubber ball. "We're so glad to have you with us, Mrs. Twistytail!" spoke Nurse Jane. "Yes," added Uncle Wiggily. "'We needed some help to hold the boat on the ice. The wind is very strong." Just then the traffic police dog held up his paw. "Stop! There is danger ahead! Stop!" 7. "Now we shall have a fine ice boat ride, all by ourselves," said Uncle Wiggily to Nurse Jane. "Yes," agreed the muskrat lady, "but 1 feel sorry for Mrs. Twistytail. And oh, look, Uncle Wiggily!" she suddenly cried. "1 guess we had better feel sorry for ourselves! There is the Fox and Wolf!" The bunny said: "Don't worry! 1 bumped the pig lady and 1 can bump them! I'll catch them on my anchor!" 2. As soon as Nurse Jane was in the ice boat, ¦Uncle Wiggily steered out toward the middle of the pond. But the wind began to blow extra hard, and the ice boat went so fast that it stood up on one end. ''Oh, I'm falling out!" cried Nurse Jane. "Don't say that!" begged the bunny. "1 must say it. because it's true!" squealed the muskrat IftdV. "We "need some ballast to make the boat heavy. Get Mrs. Twistytail!" 3. Uncle Wiggily looked at Mrs. Twistytail, who was crossing the pond. "Yes, she would be heavy enough to hold down my ice boat," said the bunny. "I'll get her!" Uncle Wiggily did not mean it just >und. Straight for iane. "Beg your pardon!" said Uncle Wiggily, as the ice boat bumped the lady pig. that way, but the wind suddenly swung the boat arour the lad\- pig it swooped. "Oh my!"'screamed Nurse J< 5. "What is the matter, Mr. Police Dog?" asked Uncle Wiggily, with a twinkle of his pink nose. "Are you arresting me for speeding?" "No! But there is a big crack in the ice just ahead! You may fall into the water." The bunny thanked the Police Dog and said: "1 think 1 can jump my ice boat over the crack!" And he did, but the boat jiggled so much that Mrs. Twistytail fell out. "Here I go\" she squealed. 6. "Uncle Wiggily! Oh, Uncle Wiggily!" cried Nurse Jane as she looked over the edge of the wash tub. "We have lost Mrs. Twistytail!" The bunny said this was too bad. "I'll turn around, go back after her and pick her up," he added. Mrs. Twistytail was lucky in falling, however. She fell on a sled.drawn by her two little boys, Curly and Floppy. "Never mind about me!" she criecf. "Go on! 1 don't like ice boats!" 8. The ice boat skimmed along over the frozen pond. The Fox and Wolf waited to catch Uncle Wiggily and nibble his ears. But the bunny suddenly cast his anchor over the side, letting it dangle. "Up you go now, my ice boat!" he cried. He steered the craft up into the air, and the dangling anchor caught the Wolf and Fox. "What are you going to do with them?" asked Nurse Jane. "Wait!" laughed the bunny. 9. "Let us go! Let us go!" howled the Fox and the Wolf, as they found themselves being carried up off the ice. "Ha! Ha! That's what I would be saying to you if you had caught me," laughed Uncle Wiggily. -But I'll let you go! I'll let you go right into the water!" So saying, the bunny cut the anchor rope and the airship ice boat sailed on, while the Fox and Wolf splashed into the ice cold water! And if the litUe dog wiU chase bis tail and turn himself into a merry-go-'rou nd for the rubber ddll to ride on, the next pictures and story will be UNCLE WIGGILY'S BIG SNOW BALL.
