| FEDERAL C MONDAY, JANUARY \9. •Fi u DISTANT SUBSCRIBERS Are earm istacl to transmit their Arrearages to the ta'te proprietors of this Gazette, on or before the last day of this month, and save both parties the expence arid" trouble of a circular letter, containing a more urgent appeal to their feelings, as good men and worthy patrons. January 19. COLONEL BURR. Many persons have been not a little sur- prized at the promptitude with which Mr. Burr's Draughts have been accepted, in N. York. The whole of this business is now in a fair way to be publickly known. We would not unadvisedly impeach an indivi- dual speculator, nor rashly denounce, of a sivhidier, any private citizen ; but we owe to the konest part of the community, and especially to the mercantile world, every ef- fort which can tend to their safety. We are authorised to declare that the draughts cw- ccfted by Mr.------- Ogden (drawn by Burr) -will not be.paid. Our informant,a respec- table meichant of this city, is no small suf- ferer. We sincerely hope the number of his fellow-sufferers, who, in receiving these k payments for goods, forgot the neces- sary inquiries, may be very limited. By an a/rival at Norfolk, from Bordeaux, the editor of the Public Ledger has received Paris papers containing the 15th and 16th bulletins of the Grand Army. The former is said to be dated at Wittenberg, the 23d, and the latter at Kopstadt, the 24th Octo- ber. The Norfolk paper has it. IVirtemberg; but as the French emperor k not much in- clined to advance back-wards, previous to a final settlement with Prussia, Wt consider this a typographic error : it should have been printed Wittenberg, which is the ca- pital cf Saxony ; to which place Napoleon ad doubt proceeded after the overthrow of the Prussians. The French papers have not reached us. The ediior of the Norfolk Ledger says— The 16th bulletin states, that English goods had been seized at Leipsic to the amount of sixty millions of francs (13 milli- ons of dollars) that the emperor had Order- ed each officer a complete suit, and a great- coat and coat for each soldier of his army. The marquis LuChesini (Prussian minister) had been some clays at the head-quarters of Napoleon, but who had refused to see him— this minister, however, was permitted to have frequent communications with Duroc, the master of the palace. French columns entered Potsdam on the 23d, and Berlin on the 24th October. The duke of Brunswick's minister was treated with the most marked indignation. We understand that general Eaton passed through town this morning, on his way to Wasliii'ftonVat the request of the president of the (Liked States. COMMUNICATION.' A certain monster in human form, who is generally known by the name of (lie " Cloak Man," has lately been in the prac- tice of interrupting and insulting Ladies as they walk the streets of this city. We have been at seme pains to ascertain who thiVunpi'incipled villain is ; and take this public method of informing him, that his name and residence are both known ; and that if he persists in his ungentlemanly and criminal conduct, he will be apprehended and punished to the utmost rigor of the law. P. S. The editors of the different papers in this city are requested to give the above an insertion. Captain Brace, of the barque Hind, ar- rived at Salem, from Negapatam, informs that considerable Mamage had been occa- sioned to the Trajare Province, from the freshets that came down the rivers Coleroon and Covery—whole villages were . swept away—droves of bullocks, above 30.000 inhabitants, almost halfof all the grain in the country, whether for consumption orseed, were destroyed. This misfortune is in a gieat measure attributed to a want of atten- tion to the several dykes and embankments. The chief part of that country is laid under water. A writer in the Aurora of this morning, Whose production savours of the Shannon and the Liffey, says, " It is a fact, that the construction of the Germantown turnpike, has saved the lives of many horses, which were killed by, sinking iu quicksands and other sloughs, in every seveieAvintcr." {United States Gaz.] The following letter from the governor Of New-York, appears in the Chronicle. It is said the governor has ordered a suit to be commenced against Mr. Farmar. 1 To the Editor of the Morning Chronicle. Sir, Although I have ever held it a degrada- tion of my official character to notice the slanders of anonymous writers, and wretch- es of little or no consideration in society, and have borne with them in* silence—yet, when they present themselves, sanctioned by the signature of a man of respectable standing, to repel them is a duty I owe myself and the community, which is inter- ested in the character of its officers. I am therefore constrained to declare, that the as- sertion contained in the Republican Hatch 'jTo'wer, cA the 2-$tb_ult, under the signature cf Thomas Farmar, of my W-ving formed a coalition 'ui:h the federalists, jar tie purpose procuring or r l wer, is a base, villainous and'slanderous falsehood, desti- tute of even the colour of foundation. In justice to the gentlemen of the federal party, I am bound to declare, that I have no reason to believe they ever contemplated or wished such corrupt combination, or any other political combination or coalition with me ; as no proposition, xrt even hint of the kind, was ever given or made to me direct- ly or indirectly by anv one of them. MORGAN LEWIS. Albany, January nth, 1807. Extract of a letter, dated NE\v-0.avAvs, Dec. 9, 1806. " The military preparations still go on herewith rapidity—both land and naval. " The Orleans volunteers are about to be put under command of general Wilkinson, and the city militia* will be placed in the same situation, provided danger should re- quire it. " This morning the chamber of com- merce met at the government house, and after hearing certain information from go- vernor Claiborne and general Wilkinson—¦ passed a unanimous opinion that an embar- go be laid on the vessels in port, and the order from the governor was immediately issued ; but it will be taken offthe moment the necessary number of sailors are obtain- ed to man the little fleet in the river, which is the main object of the embargo. The merchants also proposed that a subscription be made up to supply such sailors as might enter the public service with clothing, and several thousand dollars have been subscrib- ed already. " The bubble is out, and every body knows it ! " Burr is at the head of a party in Kentucky, to descend the fiver—disunite the union—revolutionize Louisiana—subvert the government of Orleans, and subjugate Mex- ico." Extract of a letter, dated Frankfort, Decem- ber 23. " The governor has ordered out about six hundred men, 200 to be stationed at the falls. Col.. Taylor is clothed with discre- tionary powers to call out any number he may think proper, not to exceed three full companies, to guard the arsenal. By a letter from the secretary of war, captain Stoddert, with 100 troops, is to be at Newport, if not by this. Burr left this about ten days ago. The second day after his ball he was heard of at Hardin C. H. and it is said again at Hartford ; but as to this tliKre is some doubt, as many think he has gone to Nashville. Indeed I am this moment informed he was met on that road with several led horses, and general Adair close m his rear. . " A great number Of boats have gone down. Fourteen started from the falls about six days ago, with 120 men. Thirty were to join ibeui at the mouth of Salt ri- ver, and a number more at the mouth of Cumberland. Blanarliasset went among the first boats about ten day ago. Mrs. Blanarliasset has been slopped, and was ex- pected at the falls about this day. Blanar- liasset told a friend of Mr. Graham, that their object was to go and take possession of Orleans, the bank, and a French train of artillery, and by operating on the commerce, to force them into a separation. Edward Tiffin, esq. at present govern- or of Ohio, has been appointed senator of the United States, for six years from the third of March next, in the room of Mr. Wortlungton, whose term then expires. {Nut. In/ell.-] An attorney in presenting a copy of a writ to an auctioneer, appoiogized for his unfriendly visit, and concluded with hoping that the other would not be offended, as he was merely performing an unpleasant duty of his profession. '• Certainly not,"said the auctioneer, '¦ you must attend to the duties of your profession, and so must I to mine." This said, he instantly knocked him down. London paper. Let the American people now observe. Ten thousand times has it been said that British gold was used to establish an influ- ence in this country. No circumstance has ever transpired which gave the least shadow of support to this allegation. But by recent discoveries made in the unquestionable shape of legal investigation, it is now proved in the most, unequivocal manner, that men high in rank in this country, have been the pensioners of France and Spain. This fact ought to be published by federal editors in every corner of the union. If there are any democratic editors who love truth better- than party, let them likewise extend the knowledge of a circumstance so dangerous to the public welfare. Democrats are in power. What more do they want ? Let them no longer countenance suspicions, where they know them unmerited, nor screen the machinations of fereign intrigue, which are poisoning the very vitals of the republick, the officers of government. {Repertory.] Longevity.—Thomas Beaty, of Drumcon- dra, near Dublin, has nearly completed his 102 years. He walks as upright as most men in the prime of life, and has not lost a tooth. His oldest surviving son is 73 years of age/and his youngest not quite t.vo years- old. His wife is pregnant at this time.— This surviving veteran was originally a wea- ver, but has generally worked as a garden- er, in which capacity he daily attends- the Dublin market. He told a gentleman, who conversed with him last week, that one of his trees, this season, had produced 1500 apples. . [irish paper. J The robenief, a \'tt generally known by the name of the false Accacta, is now ex- tensivcly cult- .rated in France. It had here- tofo«i been reared only for its fragrance ', but citizsn Francais c!e Neafc'hateau has as- certained that it will, in ten or twelve years attain the size of an oak of thirty or forty years standing. Citizen Neulchateau planted a tract about two acres, about six feet from each other, and valued at no more than six francs ; in ten years the timber was felled and sold for 36,000 francs; and in the ten succeeding years, he had three top- pings or new cuttings of very considerable value. These trees, planted in hedges, and cropped every third year, form an impene- trable fence, rendering at the same time much useful wood. The slightest and most hun- gry soils will answer for them. {English paper.'] Married, on Thursday last, by the rev.
