| From-th; KoffiV: Ledger, t>f March 6. Spain.'-*-There is something mysterious in the conduct of S^ain at this moment, that merits attention. It is a fact, that a British frigate lately went to Vera Cruz and took in ¦ three millions of dollars, with which she sailed about the later end of January. Two other British frigates were momently ex- pected, (and some reports say that they had arrived) to take off eight millions more. We know of a certainty that several Ame- rican vessels have been hired to go to La . Vera Crux, to take off specie. These ves- • sels have Spanish peTWiissions of course, and they are furnished with British passports. ' These tilings would not be done without an understanding between the two govern- ments. A file of Paris papers to the 28th Decem- ber, which was received last night, contain some papers which notice Spain in tenno that prove that her conduct Us excited some attention in France, and that it has been felt in Spain. Those who know the state of the press in both countries will make due allowance for the caution with" which they speak. A Paris Journal of the 16th of Dec. thus remarks : " In the critical situation to which the enemies of Francs have been reduced in so short a time, it is nit wonderful that for , want of uuarmy capable of resisting, they Shou'd b4w sought easier .and more shame- ful means of fighting htr. We mightrauge under this head, the absurd conjectures, form *d upon some military dispositions ofSpain" —(then speaking of Austria, and alluding to an article under':he Madrid head, the journ - alist adds) — " '.he court of Spain has every thins* to gaifk in Hie -alliance to which it lias • remained faithful; and that of Vienna, be- ing at length fully awakened to its own in- terests, sees in the new order which is pre- paring, the end of those political convulsi- ons that have so long rent Europe. " We shall soon have occasion to expati- ate more at large upon this important sub ject." The following is the article alluded to : Madrid, November I. "We have been greatly surprised here at the strarrge interpretation given by a French '• Journal to the proclamations which had been made lor the purpose of putting our .jm'litary forces on a more formidable footing, preventing the aggressions « hich the situa- tion of Europe might lead Spain to appre- hend, anri those dangers which the genius of. Napoleon has so soon caused to disap- pear. Closely connected as Spain has been for several years past with France, both by her csmrnercial interests and by her policy, as soon as she saw the war break out on the continent, she put herself in a pasture either to assist her ally or to resist the enterprizss which England might make, either by her- self or by her aid of the powers engaged ill the coalition newly formed against France. Nothing assuredly but a profound ignorance of the real situation of this country could -occasion a doubt as to the part it had taken between a powerful nation which can do "every thing to defend us, and is in want of nothing to do us injury, and an enemy em- ployed for these five years past, in destroying -tar navy, undermining our trade, pillaging -our treasures, and laying waste our colonies with the torch oi rebellion. The rulers and the citizens of this state should be made acquainted with the perse- vering spirit which prevails ?vnong our neigh- bor's relative to internal improvements. We consider the time which may be bestowed by our fellow citizens in perusing a late re- port to the Pennsylvania legislature, on this subject, and which will be found in ouv pa. per this evening, by no means lost or ill spent. A New-York paper, of March r4, says, the president of the United States has or- dered a detachment of troops to the western territory, to escort Burr to the seat of go- vernment, as a prisoner of state. To adopt the style of a celebrated author on the sci- ence of cooking, the government may say, "first catch Burr, then," Sec. FIRE. About 2 o'clock, P. M. yesterday, a fire broke out in the stable of Mr. James Brown, Old-Town. The stable was consumed, and an adjacent building considerably damaged ; but the activity of the fire-companies and citizens generally prevented further mischief. In addition to the intelligence received in the papers, by capt Messervy, he states that Bonaparte arrived in Paris about the 2oth January, that he was collecting more troops and putting into requisition as many as he could find ; that 14,000 men were required from Bordeaux to join the grand army in ¦ Poland; that there had been several recent actions with the Russians, and that in the last battle, in which each army consisted 0/ 140,000 men, the Russians gained th- advan- tage. [Boston Gaz.~\ By the last accounts from Constantinople, it appears that an English squadron, seven ships of war, under admiral Louis, has ar- rived near the Dardanelles ; admiral Louis had sent a frigate up to the city; possibly to concert measures with the Russians. A t Montego Bay, Jan. 30, schr. Henrietta, Pearson, for Baltimore, next day. Sloop "New-Jersey, from Great Egg Har bor, arrived at New York, informs, that the brig-------, Shaw, of Portsmouth, from Hon- duras, went on shore at that place on Sunday the 8th instant. Lost her rudder ; cargo nearly all landed. Such are the hles*ed effects resulting from the vaccine or cow pock inoculation, that in the city of Glasgow, in Scotlarid. (which contains as many inhabitants as New-York) during the last year only fifteen children have died of the small pox. In the year 1797, the number was two hundred and thirty-four. (W.
