The following remarks from a late Lor. Ion

" The public will learn with interest that
the literary monument whh h has long been
projected to the memory of the most illus-
trious character of modern times1, is at
length completed. No apology can be requi-
site for erecting such a monument to him,
who was the first in war, the first in peace,
and the first iu the hearts of his fbllow citi-

great and prosperous empire, and whose mo.

imitation of all statesmen This performance
of judge Marshall has already been distin-

been considered as deserving, in point of ex-

entire compass of history and biography

LONDON, February 12.
General Craiufurd's Expedition,
We have the pleasure of annodncing the
safe arrival at St. Jago, on the 14th of De-
cember last, of the expedition under general
Crawfurd. The following letter from a
gentleman attached to the expedition is the
more gratifying, because we can implicitly
rely on the accuracy of our correspondent :
Island of St. Jago, Dec. 28, 1806.
It is a chance if "this ever reaches you ;
but I shall run the risk of writing, as the
Argomanof war, which accidentally came in
here a few clays ago, will sail tr.^lay on a
cruize, and it is probable she may have the
good fortune of forwarding this letter to
England.
" The expedition under command of bri-
gadier general Crawfurd, left Falmouth on
the izth November, and arrived here on the
14th inst. The following is a list of the
ships of Wat which accompanied it viz.

Together with two companies of artille-
ry, a proportion of the corps of Roval En-
gineers, Artificers, and Drivers. The 9th
Light Dragoons accompanied the expediti-
on to this place, and are still here. Tliey
ars commanded by the honorable colonel
Malum, who is senior to, and not under
the orders of general Crawfurd. It is
thought they will leave us as soon as admi-
ral Murray joins us.
" We experienced much bad weather in
the early part of the voyage, and several of
the transports sustained some damage, in
consequence of running foul of each othet
in the night, the weather being very foggy.
The wind was so unfavorable, that the fleet
did not arrive ofi Madeira until the 5th De-
cember. The commodore sent off the Pau-
lina sloop and the two schooners, with two
store transports for the purpose of obtaining
wine for the fleet, but these vessels were
unfortunately blown off the island and did
not overtake the fleet until a considerable
time after their arrival here. After suffer-
ing a severe gale off Madeira from the north-
ward, the fleet, reached the island of Pal-
ma early on the 7th. Here we fell in with
the Nereide frigate, which had parted from
the fleet very early in the voyage. Off Ma-
deira, she had fallen in with and taken a
Spanish privateer and a merchantman, the
former of which, being dismantled by the
captors, was given up to the prisoners, who
were allowed to depart^the other has since,
been brought inhere ; she is laden with pre
visions.
" Previously to the landing of any part
of the fleet, the general made the most pru-
dent arrangement with the governor of this
place, respecting the regular establishment
of a market, and the most effectual means,
of obtaining refreshments for the navy and
army. In consequence of which there has
been the most plentiful supply of all sorts
I of provisions, fruit etc. winch the island
j affords, though not very reasonable. The
governor has been very attentive to the
troops. To prevent a surprise of the fleet
by an enemy's squadron, the general thought
it prudent to erect a battery of four 24"
pounders, on the west point of the bay of
Porto Prava, which is capable of raking
vessels coming ill the bay.
" We are perfectly ignorant where we
are yet destined. We are wearied with con-
jecture. The fleet is completely watered,
and we are now only waiting for the arriv-
al of admiral Murray, who is daily expect-
ed."
Advices were this day received in town,
stating that the above expedition, sailed from
St. Jago on the nth January, supposed t«
be going round Cape Hern. The ships
bound to Buenos-Ay res left them on the zd
January.
