Extract of a letter from the American Con- sul, dated, St. Jago, March 6, 1807. " Enclosed you will find a correct list of the .Americans taken in Miranda's expedi- tion—their names, places of resilience and friends, together with sentences.* This list hr.s this day been famished to me by cap'. Peleg Barker, late canuiiaiicler of the ship Grampus of New York, seized and condemn- ed in Conception, and who arrived here a few days since from Carthagena ; the situa- tion of those in Carthagena he represents to be truly deplorable. . " It may perhaps be a consolation to their friends, to hear of those who yet remain in existence, tho' a miserable cue indeed. I do not understand they are treated with o- ther severity, than what their sentence de- mands, and a p.irt of their misery arises as I jfonCeive rnortt -from the want of a toiling r.im of money tft alleviate their neepseitisS than from any" wanton acts of cruelty in the Spanish government. " The schr. Seaflower, of New York, has this instant been announced as being at the Moro, a prize to a French felucca privateer- Nothing further new, but the loss of tire brig Ceres, of your port, from hence to Phi- ladelphia, part of the cargo and ail specie sa- ved; taken possession of by the British, and together with the capt, (Lewis) at Jamaica, libelled for want of proof of property. This vessel I understand was lost on the Cacois." * This list will be given complete in our next. Loss of the schr. Peggy, Dimock, of Wca- thersiicld. The Peggy sailed from Barbados the 9th, January, bound to the Carolinas. After beating on that coast for a number of days, and encountering many severe and rough gales of wind on the 2d Feb. being in fifteen fathoms water, off Charleston light-house, was again drove oif, when he bore away for New London. After encountering many se- vere gales, got soundings Feb. 14, in lat, 38, 40, long. 74. On the 15th, being wil'.i- in six leagues of Sandy-Hook light, a tre- mendous gale came on from the WNW. which drove us two hundred miles to the eastward. On the 19th, heavy gales from the southward. On the 20th, got soun- dings sixteen fathoms off Montaug point, wind WNW". blowing heavy, a bad sea, with hail and snow—the Peggy carrying a press of sail to gain her post, her sheathing started, from her starboard bow, when her leak en- crcased to400 strokes an hour. On the 21st, ripped up her ceiling on the starboard bow ; found one of the butts started --the leak en- creasing as the sheating came off. Used every exertion in vain to stop the leak. On the 22d 23 and 24th heavy gales.-- On the 2,5th, moderate ; thrapt her with hawsers to confine her sheathing) but all in vain. , t 2, P. M. fell in with and spoke schr. Edwarl Preble, Sutnerland, from bos- ton to Jamaica, who offered me every as- sistance in his power ; but our situation was such that we were compelled to abandon our vesseL We saved some provision and clo- thing, a mainsail and sqnaresa.il, some rig- ging and blocks, and left her at 4 o'clock, in consequence of the increasinggals. At half pastfl, the Peggy went down. On the 8th March, in lat. 26, long. 03, spoke brig Hetty, Love, from St. Thomas, tor Liverpool. On the 9th, was boarded by the Milan British frigate, examined closely, and treated polite- ly. On the 13th, spoke the brig Mayflow- er, Lufkin, from Surinam for Newburyport, who, with much satisfaction, received us on b wd. And I now take this method of re- turning ray sincere k hearty thanks to capt. Sutherland, of the Edward Preble, to Mr. George Newman, a passenger, and to capt. Lufkin, of the Mayflower, for their kindness and respect, and for the assistance rendered to me and my people. JOSEPH DIMOCK.. LIVERPOOL, February 26. " Eigur days sfter 1 left your port, in lat. 49, 31, long. 15, W. I had the misfortune to fall in with a Spanish privateer of 18 guus and 120 men, who fired a gun and brought me to, under English colors, and ordered me to come on board with my papers, where I was detained several hours, during which they ilu notable to send me anv > - tiiice. 1 there- fore proceeded as instructed, to this port, where I at:;., tne 17th instant, and have applied to \ .. Controversies between individuals ara1 certainly of no importance to the community at large ; but it is surely of some consequence to the public that the improper artifices of any man should be Exposed. From a consideration of this kind, as wellas from motives of psr« sonal reputation and individual ntereat, I tee! myself obliged to reply to the scun-il -,is invec- tive and pompous and pert insolence of An- drew Hania, the bookseller, which appeared in the " A-merican and Commercial Daly Ad- vertiser" of yesterday. In the first place, I wi'l introdsce the ren*' (ler to an acquaintance with the facts in tha case. Some months back I undertook to collect,1 arrange and prepare for pr-;ss, the names of? citizens, streets, &c. for the purpose of pub- lishing u Baltimore Directory, and.War.ner &» Hanns agreed to print it for me. The whole ol the responsi ility rested oc n.e. Acc>;' i.Vlv' I per irnied villi punctuality and us nvuctf \1spatcl1 as possible tlr- task assigned—the Directory was pi:bi.shed—when, the said Hanna had the unblushing' aux.lapi.ty to tell me, that as soon as lie had sold copies* sufficient to pay for printing, he would allow , me to par, ale of the profits I It is, easy to per- ceive that I could have proem ed any other printer in the city to have performed the work: tor me at a moderate price, without requiring' any part of the profits—but- this kind-hearted, genti riiai, (who quotes one of lord Kaimes?3 observations with respect to benefits very learn- edly, from a little five-penny ttook which ha keeps for sale) would fain enjoy all the profits to be.derived from the sale of the work ! Perceiving his attempt U wjtotig u»e, I pro- cured triends. and made him « te, der, ^.legaL tender, in specie, oi'the lull amoun, it the bill for printing—nay, Levenoliered him fifty dol- lars over and above what he w.is entitled to ; when, to cap the climax of las peiiu-ijus base* nes... he refused to take the money, a'to deli- ver the books until I should have paid him a. book sccoimt, which he avers I ewe him. This book account, be it understood, originat- ed in this way—Iliad, in orderto oblige *ai>l Hanna, and to make something for myself, procured several subscribers to the Lite of Bonaparte : this work when published, '. JelU vered to the subscribers, and have paid Han- na more than I have received as yet, on ac- count of them—1 owe a balance on these—I have, perhaps, had a little paper and a few quills, from his shop ; and, to the immortal honor of said Hanna, and his" benefits," be it known, that once, yes o«ce .' he had the noils generosity to lend me o*ie dollar .'—I owe the firm, fro 111 the above circumstances perhaps abo.it Lwenly-six dollars, not more. By delivering mctlie books be would have enabled me. at once to have pais him this trifle = —But no ! He thought he could impose oi» me and compel me to take about 50 dollars for above five months arduous labor. The bili which 1 offered to pay him is not, in many respects, a just one —He purchased the pa- per fur 2 dollars 50 cents, and charged me 3J dollars for it—the outside quires which ill fair- ness he ought to have given up to me (as every other printer in the city I believe wovjld) lies -has nut accounted for—aim after charging mes full price for every thing, he added an item of 50 dollars ! And for what ! He said lor Una good j'ill of the work! O, Usury, wnat namest wilt thou not invent to serve thy turn ! Toe number ot copies, for the printing of which I am charged and offered, u pay, iss 12.70- The sheriff'* 1 IbVer when he served thes replevin, comd only find part—It follows that; Hanna must'huve secreted the remainder, anil is now I find offering them for sale In additi- on to which he has had the skulking meanness to send (as I am well informed) a boy round to» my subscribers with the book, directing him to» say that I had Sent him. But I feel confident; that the citizens of Baltimore will never con- nive at such dishonorable conduct, and thatt my subscribers (who shall be waiiedon in a, few days) will never countenace the conduct; of Andrew Hanna, to deprive me of the fn.ita of my labor. If Hanna treats every body as he treats me,' Heaven defend those who may fall in his way with a book to print. I forbear to retort on him for his scwrrrilitv". —When he came to this city bear and penny- less lie found friends to assist h'rs necessities a yet this man, who has risen by the bounty of thes community, would gladly tyrannise over ones who is honestly endeavoring to make a liveli- hood.-:——Surely he deserves to have his imagej (to use a few words of his own quotation) " engraved in marble," and perched upi n the top of the market-house. 1 have no doubt but the savage would put me " into the handa of Mr. Madeira, goaler," if it were in his pow- er ; bull have appealed to the laws of this frees country, and he will find that they will pro- tect me against the sinister designs of an im- pertinent upstart. I lament that I have been compelled to np- • peal to the laws. It has not been my wish t I offered to submit our differences to arbitra- tion—to men of his own. choice. He refused —and compelled me to resort to the strong arm of justice for redress. The whole of the facts contained in th.se foregoing, can be substantiated by respectable ., testimony. JAMES M'HENRY.
