Turkey, that negotiation* are abo.it to be
opened, for surrendering the fortress of Scha-
barz to the Servians.
The following article is copied from the
Presburg gazette of the 20th of February ;
" according to general report, the English
men of war, lying off Constantinople, and
which have been joined by some ¦Russian
ships of the line from the Crimea, have al-
ready fired on that city, and threatened it
with a most f >rmiii;uilr bombardment, if they
did not iniiiir-diately pall down the standard
of Makome*.
Captain Vickery informs, the day he left
Batavia, (November 27) that three British
of battle ships, 2 frigates and an armed
vessel came too off Batavia, sent in their
boats* took possession of and burnt a Oirtch
frigate and all the Dutch merchantmen in
port.
Captain Chrystie, who arrived at- New-
V irk on. Thursday from Curracoa, informs,

CHARLESTON, Aprils.
His Britannic majesty's sloop of war
Indian, captain Austin, went to sea on Sa-
turday.
The ship Uncle Toby, which struck on
the breakers, on Friday last, has got of and
returned into port.
The schr, Katy, captain Long, from this
poit for Africa, having sprung sleak, was
run ashore near Stone's Breakers on Friday
night last, and is entirely gone to pieces-
ipiain and crew were taken off the
wreck on Saturday morning, by one of the
jailat-boats.

Charleston, for Baltimore, on the 8th in-

from Charleston, on the 6th instant, for

The chief justice of the United States has
desired hs to inform the public that the words
y him in the written opinion, which
he delivered in the case of Aaron Burr, im-
por, as he conceives, no insinuation a-
gainst gen. Wilkinson ; and has moreover,
declared that none was intended.

Liverpool, March 7.
The demand for cotton continues free, and
the imports trifling. The cargo of the
C-ood Intent, from New Oi leans, has sold
freely at 19 l-2d. a SOd.and Uplands at 17d.
The demand for American wiieat was
Brisk at the commencement of the week.
New-York, 12s. 6d. Virginia, 12s. 3d. per
70 lbs. but i2s. 9d. is asked to-day, and no-
thing doing. Flour nominally iSs. a 47s.
A prize cargo was sold yesterday, and Ha-
vana sugars, for exportation, sold as follow :
prime white, SOs. a 51s. middling white, 33s.
a 4'fft.per-cvrt. browns, 27s. 6d. a 29s. 6d.
principally on speculation, as there is no de-
mand for export, and this market is over-
stocked.
American premiums have rather declined,
and 4 guineas have been given here, from
hence to the Atlantic states.
Kingston,, March 14.
Oil Monday afternoon the long-looked
for London and Cork fleets made their ap-
peaianca off this port; the former sailed from
Portsmouth on the 4th of January, num-
bering 137 sail, under convoy of the Prince
• ¦-. of 08 guns, captain Losack. They
arrfVed at Barbados, on the 25th ult. where
they f.-ufi'd thedCork fleet, numbering 114
sail. The fleet from Falmouth, numbering
about 13 sail, und?r convoy of the Blond
', arrived at Barbados the clay after
the Portsmouth fleet ; and the whole of the
for this island, attached to the three
fleets, sailed from Barbados on the 87th, un-
der convoy of the Blond, arrived at Port-
Royd, with the ships for Kingston.

Captain !>. reports that on the i8th F:i. at
anchor in the i) )»n5, with about 30O sail of
shipping, at 6' o'clock in. the morning the
wind shifted suddenly round from NVV. to
NNiL and came one of the most vi dent
gales that ever was experienced at that place,
and in one hour's time three quarters of the
shipping were adrift ; being a thick snow
storm many of the ships got foul of each
other and were totally stript of their masts
and bowsprits, and that when he cat his
cables (which was at. 11 A. M.) in the short
distance lie could see, counted I I ships with-
out a mast or bowspirt standing. Passing
the South Foreland, saw one ship sua', and
5 ashore on Deal Beach. March 21, got
into Dover, and found that out of the whole
fleet of shipping which were at anchor when
the gale commenced, but 24 (men of war
included) rode out the gale ; i5 sail were
lost between Deal town and the South Fore-
land ; a number of the dismasted ships drift-
ed over on the coast of France, and were
wrecked. Several frigates and sloops of war
were dispatched after.the gale to give assist-
ance to the disabled ships, and were daily
towing them in.

to sail about the 7th March ; New-Jersey,
M'Di-ea, of and for Philadelphia, no account
of since the gale ; brig Presidenf, Lynch, of
| Boston, for the Canaries, put into Ports-
mouth, with damage ; and several other
ships, names not recollected.
bailed From Dover in company with the
brig Pallas, Wilcox, of Savannah, for Tene-
riffa, and the schr. Cornelia, Hathway, of
New-Bedford, for ditto. The ship Alexan-
der, Foster, of Norfolk, was lost on Dead
Beach in the gale of the '8th ; crew saved,
except tlie servant and cabin boy, drowned.
March 18, in lat. 89, 22, long. 49, 36, spoke
the blig Aurora, Miller, from Boston, for
Amsterdam, 34 days out ; had experienced
very heavy gales of wind ; on the 19th had
sprurtga leak and had four feet water in the
hold, and had the most part of his cargo
damaged. April 9, spoke the brig iristi-
des, Crusf iar, from Trieste, via Barcelona, 62
friys from the latter place; supplied him
with one barrel of beef.

together with four seamen overboard-car-
ried.away her head-quarter galleries, &c.

the Isle of France -coff-e and teas—Isaac.
M'Kirri. Left there, February 7, ship Sal
ly, Mix, of New-York, uncertain ; Polly,
Holmes, of New-York, in a few days, to
touch at Bourbon ; brig Expectation, Tar-
ris, Philadelphia, in 3 or 4 weeks. The
Montezuma, Dashiell, of Baltimore, from
Calcutta, put in in distress, repaired and
sailed for Haliimors, 6 days before. The
brig Caroline, Cummings, of Philadelphia,
sailed 7 days before, to touch at Bourbon.
The brig Suwarrow, from Mocha, sailed 20
days before, for loston or Salem.
Also, brig Eliza and Sarah, Wilson, 23
days from St. Jago de Cuba, ballast—the
master. Left, scii'r Philanthropist for Bal-
timore, in iO days. Brig Zone, from Port-
land bound to Honduras, brought in by a

bound to St. Jago, captured on account of
having British manufactures on board. The
French privateers capture every vessel
