« Dear Brother,
" I embrace a very uncertain opportunity
of informing my friends of my unhappy si-
tuation. I left-New-York under promising
circumstances, in good spirits, and with an
idea of soon returning to enjoy with my
friends the reward of prudence and industry.
But alas ! vain hope ! behold me now, doom-
ed to groan in a foreign country, under the
jgaUjng chains of slavery,, for a term of TEN
'years, deprived of liberty, and all I hold dear
m life.
" I shall give you a particular account of
the expedition, in which I was engaged, as
well at what happened to myself. Francis
