The following is extracted from a letter writ., ten by Henry Ing# sol], (son of Mr. Jona- than Ingersoll, of Stockbridge,) to his 'brother-in-law, the late Thomas Allen, esq. of thistown, dated at" Carthagena, Octo- ber 26, 1*506," received from New-York. « Dear Brother, " I embrace a very uncertain opportunity of informing my friends of my unhappy si- tuation. I left-New-York under promising circumstances, in good spirits, and with an idea of soon returning to enjoy with my friends the reward of prudence and industry. But alas ! vain hope ! behold me now, doom- ed to groan in a foreign country, under the jgaUjng chains of slavery,, for a term of TEN 'years, deprived of liberty, and all I hold dear m life.
