COLE {_ I.BONSAL, Auct'rs. TURNPIKES. Extract of a letter from a gentleman at Western Run, Baltimore county, :!.-:tcl May 4, 1S'07, to his fricr.d in the citv «/ Baltimore. I am haupy to find that the YORK TURN- PIKE ROAD is soon to go into operation ; it will be the greatest advantage, to us farmers that can possibly happen to our county. Last winter was so severe, and the roads so b- d, that with difficulty we g-oi our produce to mar- ket; and although we have hay, cord-wood, Stc. in abundance, we might as well have hat! it beyond the mom tains, as we could not tret it to market; wdiile our neighbors in the Garrit- son Forest enjoyed the advantage of a turnpike, and have furnish' d the town with wood, hay, Sec. at great prices, by which they are grow- ing rich, while we are compelled to stay at home, or have our horses, waggons and carta destroyed. We are determined to take as much Stock a« we can get, as we find the Reij- ters-town Company have divided Ten per cent; which is laying our money out lo great advan- tage. Besides, we find that that part of Balti- more lying east of Jones's Falls, which wai first settled, is far behind the west pa.it of tho town, both in population and in buildings-— this is for want of a good road. When tho road is finished, the waggons will be as plenty from the hny-scales in Oldtown to Griffith's bridge, as they now are in Howard-street. Indeed Philpot's Hill and Fell's-Point, are much interested in the York turnpike road; the produce that will come down that road, must diverge towards the Point, whereas the Frederick and Rcister's town turnpike road, will diverge towards the head of the basin. Tho citizens who hold property to the east of Baltimore, would do well to consider the ne- cessity of aiding this road. Many object to turnpikes ; some from parsi- mony ; some through ignorance ; and a few have an eye to the next election. It is now no question, whether turnpikes are of advantage or not—we have already two leading to town, which will shortly be completed ; and if wo do not finish our road, our land will fall in price, and our part of the county will be a, wilderness, in comparison with the district so incalculably benefited by other roads.
