At an annual meeting of the Baltimore Library Company, held at the Library on the 27th phiipo, the Directors made the following REPORT : The Directors of the Baltimore Library Company, are sorry to report to their Con- stituent:-, that the ship Shepherdess, from London to Nwrfolk. o'u board of which were the books ordered last spring) was cast away c.uly in the winter. They would have bt-en a valuable acquisition to the litera- ry treasure already possessed by the compa- ny : however, there is this alleviation of *.he disappointment, that the books will pro- bably be repurchased, and forwarded during the course of the present year, without any Material injury to the public stock, in con- sequence of the property being insured, and ef the generous activity of a respectable gentleman of Norfolk, who there was pleas- ed to attend to the interests of the Library Company, En addition to an order fpr re- purchasing the books lost, the directors now tfi hi.- chosen, v.iil have it in their power to in.-.ke out and Send tor a much larger num- ber of works than in the last year; which coining at the same time, will add very con- siderably to the value and utility of the es- tablishment, raised and cherished by the ex- ertions of tha. stockholders, and managed under their authority. The facilities afford- to persons seeking improvement, by the re- gulations for the government of the Libra- ry, are such as tend to encourage pursuits of literature, and to render accessible upon ea- sy terms, the best models of elegant com- position, and for perfecting the taste. It must be gratifying to the proprietors, who, ¦when they subscribed to the institution, •were actuated as well by public as private considerations, to observe and hear, how much the library is resorted to by persons Of every description, desirous of useful and or- namental learning. No institution of the kind, unsupported by public munificence, offers to them a readier accommodation ; there is, therefore, reason t° expect} that mimy, who to this time have postponed taking an interest in the Library, will no longer forego procuring this advantage to themselves and their families, but will at a trifling expense, avail themselves of so co- pious a fund of useful, ornamental and en- , tertainingliterature, acquired bylunited|exer- tions, and every year increasing in value, now much more rapid will this increase be, when the number of proprietors being dou- bled and trebled, many of the best ancient and modern works, of different languages and countries, will be collected in the Libra- ry ? Tue Directors, now surrendering the trust, with which they have been honored, look forward with pleasure to that period, when the antiquary, the historian, the as- tronomer and geometrician, the poet and Connoisseur of the fine arts, and in general, the studious in all useful learning, will find ¦whatever may aid and enlighten them in their various pursuits. The company has been enlarged by the addition of six new members, and the num- ber of shares, which constitute its stock, is four hundred and twenty. The Directors are sorry to remark, that too little attention is shewn by many of the members,'to the payment of their annual contributions, by which the trouble and ex- pense of the institution are both increased. Considering the penalty of owe cent per day for delaying to pay, to be too heavy a fine, they have conformably to their povvers, for some years, forborn to exact it ; but they are induced to think, that it will be necessa- ry to execute the law fully, and without re- spect to persons, if they wish to establish" \ punctuality in the payment of the annual contributions. The tax upon transfers has been raised to tivo dollars, in consequence of the opi- nion of the directors, that it was a proper and useful measure. The rev. Mr. Inglis and Mr. David Harris having retired last fall from the direction, their places have been filled with Messrs. John E. Howard and Charles Carroll, juti. The annexed statements will give a con- cise, bat correct view of the receipts and expenditures of the last year, and the state of the funds. STATEMENT, No I. Mr. Marfc P/nrtgUy Treasurer. May 14th, Igor. On Friday la J v)e announced in the Federal Gatzette, the conquest of Monte Viedo.— The following particulars, are from a Bar- bados paper of April 11. '• The following particulars of this event will be found highly gratifying, being given with an accuracy which does not a doubt, and upon which further proof of the valor, discipoue and enterprise of the Bri- tish arms, we pay a most willing testimony. The account is recei.ed from the American brig Troy, John Hazard, 44 days from Rio md to New-Orleans ; spoke by his majesty's ship Jason, arrived here this morning from a cruize, and communicated to us from the first authority. Gftneral Achmuty, with a reinforcement of 4 or 5000 men, about the 7th January last, arrived at Maldonada, and after having embarked all our troops then there, proceed- ed up the river towards Monteviedo, landed at Point Cartas (about three; miles from the town) the i!)th, and immediately attacked and routefi a body of Spaniards collected to prevent their landing, taking from them a 21-pounder. The English then marched and took post at the watering place, about a mile from the town. On the °9d, the Spaniards came oof of Monteviedo with 5000 men to attack them. The linghsh im- mediately decamped, and formed an appa- rent retreat, till they got three miles from the town, when they haiter1 ; the Spaniards (who supposed them iiyi; g) pursued in a most furious manner, htrafcaiug, &c. During this retreat, a party of 300 cav dry, with some infantry, were landed between the enemy and the town, from our ships.. On being attacked the enemy made a very faint resistance, and retired in the greatest cou- fusion, only 3400 Spaniards getting back to the town. The viceroy, with iOO men, escaped into the country. Our troops then proceeded to invest the town ; and on the 2d February, having made a feint at the Har- bor (or North) Gates, which drew the ene- my's attention to that part—the English army entered by the Sea Gates, which they forced, and after greit carnage took posses- sion of the town. When the Troy left Rio Grande, the Eng- lish were preparing to proceed for Buenos Ayres. General Beresfcrd was still a prisoner a- bout ten leagues from Buenos Ayres, and the English prisoners (said to be p»rse Sale by Auction.
