AN ORDINANCE For regulating the Sweeping of Chimnies, and for preventing Fires within the city of Baltimore. BE it enacted and ordained by the mayor and. city council of Baltimore, That there shall be appointed and licensed for the city, four surjeriatendants of chimney-sweepers, one of whom shall have the sweeping,Or all chimnies within the first and second wards of the city ; one other shall have the sweep- ingof all chimnies withm the third and fourth wards ; one other within the fifth and sixth wards ; and the other within the seventh and eighth wards. And no person shall ex- ercise the employment of superintendant of chimney, sweepers, in either of the said dis- tricts, unless he shall have previously ob- tained from the mayor a license for one Of the said districts, under the seal of the coin poration, and given bond, with security as hereinafter directed, on pain of forfeiting for every such offence, a sum not exceeding live dollars : and for every license! aforesaid, each superintendant shall annually pay to the register, for the use of the city, five dol- lars. And before any license shall be grant- ed or renewed, every person appointed su- perintendant of chimney-sweepers shall give bond to the mayor and cit y council of Balti- more, in the penal sum of one hundred dol- lars, with security to the satisfaction of the mayor, with condition that he will faithfully execute the employment of a superintendant of chimney-sweepers in his district, will du- ly piy and satisfy all just claims that may be against him as such, and in all things well and faithfully perform the several du- ties required by tiie ordinances of the corpo- ration relating to his office. II. And he it enacted and ordained, That each superintendant is hereby directed to apply to the occupier or occupiers of every house or of any room or apartment within his district, for permission to sweep any chimney in such house, or belonging to such room,which hath been so'mttch used as to re- quire, in the opinion of the superintendant, to be swept, and hath not been swept at any time within the term of four weeks next pre- ceding the day of such application. And if theoccupier or occupiers will not then permit such superintendant to sweep such chimney, or will not appoint a reasonable time within twenty-four hours thereafter, for the doing thereof, or will not permit sush chimney to he swept at the time which may be so ap- pointed, he, she or they shall pay* to the su- perintendant the same sum of money as if such chimney had been swept by him, and shall forfeit and pay to the corpo- ration a sum not exceeding five dollars ; and in such case the said superintendant shall and he is hereby directed to apply each and every day for the sweeping of such chimney, until the same he actually swept ; and upon every such application, if the occu- pier or occupiers of such house or room will not permit him to sweep such chimney, he shall be entitled, as aforesaid, to receive each and every day, from such occupier or occu- piers, the same sum of money as if such chimney had been swept by him each and every day, at the special instance and request of such occupier or occupiers ; and every such occupier or occupiers shall forfeit and pay to the corporation, for each and every such offence, a sum not exceeding fivedollars. III. And be it enacted and ordained, That if any of the said superintendants do not eve- ry four weeks apply as aforesaid, for per- mission to sweep each and every chimney within his district which by this ordinance ought to be sweep, and each and every day (if necessary,) repeat such application as aforesaid, he shall, for every Such default, forfeit and pay to the corporation a sum not exceeding five dollars ; and no superinten- dant licensed as aforesaid, shall demand or receive from any person, directly or indirect- ly, for his services any other or greater fees or rates than are herein allowed, under the penalty of five dollars for every such offence, to wit : for a chimney of one story, eight cents ; of two stories, twelve an half cents • three stories, fifteen cents ; of four or more stories,, eighteen cents ; if any chimney in the city or in that part of the precincts to which this ordinance shall extend, shall take fire and blaze out at the top, the superinten- dant within whose district the said chimney may be, shall forfeit and pay to the corpo- ration the sum of ten dollars : Provided, ne- vertheless, that such forfeiture shall be paid by the occupier or occupiers of the house or room wherein such chimney may Eld i Ige ; Projector, Carperutej ; Beaver, ChautKy. all for New-York ; Favorite, Pad- dock, of, Nantucket ; Hosseau, ----------,-anci ship Fanny, Smith, of Philadelphia ; Per- severattce, Delano, for Boston, ;o days ; Cordelia, Dow, of Boston, just ..riricd.--- Spoke Ae-i:USt24, Iat, 25, long, 36, 27, <'chr. Spoke May 5, in the South Channel, .schooner Temperance, from Salem, for Wilmington, 2 days out. Prig Ruby, captain Jordan, of Portland,. 33 days from Surrinam. A Plymouth schr. supposed to be bound to Kertnebunk, with flour, corn, &c. has been wrecked on Seguin. It is' thought the. people were saved, as she appeared to ha stripped of her rigging, &c. Captain William Chase, arrived here ia schr. Midas, from Saco, informs, that on 7th May inst. at 9 A. t,t:he discovered a light- schooner of about 130 tons, standing on the same course with him ; and that at 3 p. M. the schooner came 1111 abreast of him, .distant about half a mile, when she upset ; that lia immediately hove to, and sent the beat tor her assistance, but could save only one man, John Simmons, who reported that the ves- sel was the schr. William, Job Anderson, master, from Portland for Beverly ; and that the names of the persons ci owned from her were captain Job Anderson, John . Staples and Robert Carter; these being all the people on board excepting himself, when she upset. The schooner Portsmouth, Choate, for Isle of May, was drove out to sea from Ma- deira 6th March ; and was not heard of the 10th. Captain C. was on shore. The Peace, of Newburyport, from Havana for Philadelphia, has been wrecked on the Cat Keys, cargo principally lost. The crew was afterwards impressed by the schooner Decouvert.
