Kennedy, in 40 days from Rochelle. A passenger in the Missouri informs, that it was currently reported at that place, that a decisive engagement between the Russians and French had taken place, in which the victory was obtained by Bonaparte. The report added that the Russian commander in chief had fallen into the hands of the French. We presume that this rumor, like the others ¦with which the public have been deceived, has reference to events anterior to the 2d March. Ftttn Paris papers to the iSth March, re- ceived fit Philadelphia. Milan, March 17. By several arrivals at Ancona, from Con- stantinople, we learn, that on the l2lh of February, all the Russian merchant vessels in that povt were seized, and that two fri- gates with troops for Corfu, in attempting to pass the Dardanelles, were also captured. Frankfort, March 19. By several letters from Vienna, we learn, that general Michelson, whose army is nu- merous, has received orders to send the great- er part to join the army under General Hen- ftingsen. His orders are, to remain with the remainder to maintain his position at present, and to avo.id all offensive operations. In consequence, the Russians are remaining on the defensive. The Turkish government has not relaxed in its preparations. As soon as the rein- forcements, expected from Asia, shall arrive at Andrinople, the Grand Vizer, with all the generals will depart, tind act, on the offensive, to drive the Russians out of Moldavia and Walachia. The plan of operations has been agreed upon between the Grand Vizer and general Sebastiani, the French ambassador, who enjoys the fullest confidence of the Grand Seignor and the Divan. Denmark, March ?. Our court has notified to the ambassador of his Britannic majesty, that they have viewed with displeasure, an English fleet in the Baltic. Altom.-y, March lo. The Danish government has given orders to it's subjects, to furnish the corps under Mortier, with every thing in their power. Several persons of rank, have received orders to quit Petersburg, in consequence of btfig accused of speaking too freely of the events of the war and laying the fault on the government. From the London GnZ'tte, March 31. At the court of the queen's palace, March 30, 1807, present the king's most excel- letrtt majesty in council. (,-r.ry, earl Barhurst, George Rose should 1 president of the committee of privy rcoun- il appoiated for the consideration of all t' trade and foreign plantations, The ship Almy, Crow, from Jamaica for New-York, was captured about the middle of April by a French privateer, and in en deavoring to carry her into Trinidad, Cuba, she was lost on Key Largo,, about twenty leagues to windward of that port. It is said that an English frigate from Jamaica has taken off the passengers and burnt the ship. Among the passengers were two ladies of New-York. The cargo is stated to consist of 300 puncheons of rum. The following is a copy of the answer of the commander of the British sloop, of war Driver, to the letter of captain Kalteisen, which appeared in the Federal Gazette of Thursday last : [COPY.] H. M. S. Driver, Rebellion Roads, Charleston, May, 3. Sir—I have received your, letter, and hav- ing sonae doubts as to the authority by which it was written, I thought proper to satisfy myself on that head before I should reply. By the threat it contains, you ap- pear, like your government, to have some- thing to learn. A British subject knows too well how to respect and. obey the laws of his own country, to offer, intentionally, an outrage to those of others, when once they are known to be so : but I have to observe, the proclamation you mentioned to have been issued in May, i807. I know, nothing , of: of that which was issued in May, I8O0V I have oidy to say, that so far from being either creditable or becoming in the president of a country, wishing to be ranked among the civilized nations of the world, it would, in the opinion of every liberal and enlarged mind have disgraced even the sanguinary pen of a Robespierre, or the most miserable petty state of Babary. It appearing that the supposed offence is to be rendered by a repetition of the circumstances complained of, and that on those who, so far from hav- ing any thing to do with the supposed ag- gression, were not even on the American coast at the time. And as captain Whitby's trial may, probably at. this moment be pend- ing, with the concurrence of the United Statesand the proclamation resting on his be ing brought to justice, it ought to have been thought of. However, as my pvoceedingto sea, comes within the limits of my intentions, accord- ing to the orders I am under, I shall do so whenever the pilot things proper—which orders have for their view, the advantage of the American flag, as well as the protection of the British. But I must observe, that the difficulty I have experienced in obtaining a sufficient quantity of water for the purposes I wish, obliges me to have recourse to such methods as are completely within my pow- er, which I otherwise should not have tho'fr of. In the mean time,' it is necessary to in- form you, that his majesty's ship under my command, is at all times ready to resist, and punish any insult that may be offered to the flag she has the honor to bear, to the last drop of blood that shall remain, of the du- tiful and loyal subjects of a beloved sovereign, and an exalted country. I have the honor to be, Sir, your humble servant, (Signed) WILLIAM LOVE. To capita in Kalteisen, tyc. tyc. Fort Johnson, (S C.) Interments in the city of Baltimore Idstiveek. VELTENAIR. ¦ A RESPECTABLE Public are hereby in- firmed that C. V'eltenair, a celebrated Art) it, inventor .'«nd improver of several useful ma- chines, and citizen of Virginia, being on his journey to Washington to obtain letters patent. of the presidsnt of tlieUnited Status, intends in passing this city, to exhibit and to give a concert, on this instrument, by himself invent- ed, and which in the opinion of a number of judges and connoistsucrs, is admired as the on- ly musical instrument of the kind. This at- ri«i mill wonderful, and in the highest degree of art discovered musical instrument, has ne- ver been known in the musical world, produc- es the soft and swelling notes of the violin by a perpetual and Uniform friction of an end- less and artfully constructed band or bow, excites at the same time the grave and majes- tic tones of an organ. This instrument is play- ed like a piano or organ but in such a manner that the ear may be delighted with the most pure and perfect sounds of a grand piano, with or without t . • accompaniment of the touching tones of the violin or rolling sounds of an organ. The most ingenious artists of England and France have long labored on a discovery of an instrument of this kind, but in the course of their tedious experiments have failed in the attempt, and at last declared this possibility impossible, as an experience of three years, during which time this inst'rement was accom- plished, proves. The proprietor flatters him- self with the idea that the performance on this instrument will give entire satisfaction The exhibition will take place at Mr. My- er's Motel in Mark, t street, on Tuesday c- veniugnextat 7 o'clock.
