•$i^iB&&gfrvt ou the first of July, commence
tinning a SLOOP, of about o.:e hundred &
en tons Burthen, between the cities of NtW-
Tork and Hudson, for the purpose of carrying
Passengers.
Few people who have had oceaidon to lake
passage up or down the North River, but
have experienced the inconvenience and risque
of going on board vessels deeply loaded and
lumbered on deck ; therefore captain Bunker
has determined to take no Freight on board
the Experiment, which will remedy that in-
convenience and entirely do away the nsqtte.
The owners of this vessel, being desirous
to render the passage as short, convenient U
agreeable as possible, have not only taken
care to furnish her vrith the best. Beds, Bed-
ding, Liquors, Provisions, &.C but they iiave
been at a very great expence and trouble in
procuring materials and building her on the
best construction for sailing and for the ac-
commodation of Ladies and Gentlemen tra-
velling en business or for pleasure.
The Experiment will leave New-York
every Wednesday evening precisely at six
o'clock, and Hudson a\ory Sunday Morning
at 8 o'clock, throughout the season.
Captain Bunker having been several years
engaged in the freighting business between
New-York and Hudson, has becuii a well ac-
quainted with every part of the river ; and
he hopes, by attention and punctuality to me-
rit the patronage of Ladies and Gentlemen
from the Southward, who may visit the cele-
brated Ballston, Saratoga, isf Lebanon Springs,
or Travellers, who may have occasion to tra-
vel through the Northern States.—-The short-
ness of the passage to Hudson when com-
pared with that to Albany or any piace
above Hudson, (where the river is impeded
by bars, islands and overslaws that render it
impossible for fest-sailing vessels to pass) he
thinks w.U induce most people who are ac-
quainted with tlie difference, to take pass-
age to Hudson, where Carriages or Boats
can at all times be had, at a oder ate ex-
pence, to convey them to Albany, Ti-"y,
tansingbur'gh, or the Lebanon Springs, which
arc about 30 pjilcs distance,

Th/je literary Qudctiry which prompts the
publisher of every new work to endeavor to
magnify the merits of his own intended pub
lication bv depreciating the merit of all other
similar productions, is, at once, both useless
and despicable ; because nothing human can
rise into esteem and honor, merely, upon the
ruins of another's rermtation, without sonic
intrinsic excellence of its own. The Publish-
er of Gregory's Cyclopedia, therefore, will
leavejt to others to discover and declare, that
the generality of Books called Kncyclopcedias
are, in their very constitution and form, too
expensive and two eumlr rsome, to be either
extensively circulated, or generally useful ;
and will content himself with briefly stating
the claims and pretensisns of the Boo" which
he hereby proposes to offer to the public
First, It comprises the most, valuable informa-
tion in all the important departments "i Know-
ledge, collected and avr.n.:ed by some of the
best scholars, and the most comprehensively
scientific men, this day existing In Britain
Secondly. This information is ennprise .1 in a
small compass, and cornered in language at
once perspicuous and elegant; so that the
reader may. in a short space of /one, with
ease and pi' asure to himself, obtain that real
acquaint nice with the mo'-ai, literary, politi-
cal, and philosophical world, wi.K.h other-
wise could not be aoauired from the larger
works in which the sources of these streams
of knowledge are contained, but by a. whole
liie devoted to severe and unremitted labour.
In order to lender the wo'.'k worthy of the
patronage of the American public, the Pub-

of the work itself, or any want of punctuality
in its appearance, at the stated and appointed
times,- the page givea as a specimen of the
style In which tne publisher solemnly pledges
himself the whole shall be executed, may be
seen at the office of the Federal Gazette.
On account of the great abundance of mat-
ter and the number of Engravings .which the
work wilt contain, and in consequer.ee of the
vast expence necessarily attending the prose
cution of such apian, the publisher is com.
pelled to solicit the aid of a sufficient number
of subscribers, to enable him to carry his pur-
pose into full effect, before he puts any part
of the intended Publication into the hands of
the Engraver or the printer.
The acknowledged and ivitrinsic merits of
the work are such as to ensure it a very ge-
neral and extensive circuhtion : wherefore
it only remains to the Publisher to ensure
to his subscribers that the whole of the exe-
cution, as to the accuracy and elegance of the
engravings, paper, and type, shall be such,
as in every respect to correspond with the
