gentleman lounged into his chair, ' waiter, I
say, cut up that there fowl.' He did so—

plate.' He did so. ' Cut the fowl on my
plate into pieces.' This he did also.
" The solitary being before alluded to,bav.
ing observed .the proceeding of the gemtnan,
jiow said, ' John, let me have a cold fowl for
my supper,' jiniuitating the manner of the
lounger. The fowl was brought. John be-
ing requested to cut it up, helped him to the
breast and wings, salt, &c. and cut it into
pieces for him. 'John,' said he, 'put a
piece into my mouth.' John did so. 'John,
¦wag my jaws for me." John (being aware
of Hit joke) complied with his request. The
gunman immediately left the room, and was
no more seen at the inn."
from the Frederick Town Herald.
The variation of the compass, on which
the loca ion of lands in this county and else-
where so much depend, is described to be an
arch '-f The horizon, contained between the
me «d:*n of the place, and the uaaglJi tc me
f idian, and is either east or west, or is the
number of degrees, Sx. the point of the needle
Stands from the true north or south points
of th h -rizon reckoned to the east or west.
This being the case, the magnetic needle
apparently for many years has been progress-
ing toward the west until lately, an arrest
toward that point it is likely hath taken
place, and probably at this time is returning
toward the east. Having in a slight degree
Noticed, since I had any idea of variation
(from about the year 1775) that its westerly
progress hath annually in a gradual manner
tweti diminishing, until the year 1794 or 5,
at which period the needle apparently was
stationary—but it is probable that in a very
short time thereafter it may have taken a
retrogade movement in a very slow way.
For the purpose of satisfying my curiosity
as to the space of its retrogation, I was in-
chtce'i to make some observatations ill No-
vimbr, 1S02. and others at this lime, by
which I discovered, that an easterly move-
ment of the needle had taken place at the
s\ite of about three minutes and twenty-six
second* annually ; this apportionment may
not be exactly true, as it is likely the needle
may recede in a greater ratio annually the
Dearer it approaches the true meridian of
the place of observation. After which its
movement, may diminish in the same ratio,
until it again returns westward, but how far
it will-traverse, time and observations will
be die only means to discover.
Knowing myself not competent to make
tho-e nice astronomical calculations this case
requires, it would therefore be pleasing to
engage those more capable and better qua-
lified IP illustrate a matter so interesting to
the public. A SURVEYOR.
