PROPOSALS,

For publishing Ay subscription,
A NEW CYCLOPEDIA,
OR,
Dictionary of Arts Ss? Scierices.
BY G. GUEGOUY, D. D.
Author of Essays Historical and Moral, the
Economy of Nature*, C5*c. &c.
To be completed in twelve months from
the time it is put to press. In Taelve Parts.
Price two dollars and seventy-five cents
each.
T h s 1 iterary §hiackery which prompts the
publisher of every new work to endeavor to
magnify the merits of his own intended pub
lication by depreciating the merit of' all other
similar productions, is, at once, both useless
and despicable ; because nothing human can
ris? into esteem and honor, merely, upon the
ruins of another's reputation, without somg
intrinsic ixeellence of its own. The Publish-
er of Gregory's Cyclopedia, therefore, will
leave it to others to discover and declare, that
the generality of Books called Encyclopaedias
are, in their very constitution and form, too
expensive and two cumb rsOme, to be cither
extensively circulated, or generally useful ;
and will content himself with briefly stating
the claims and pretensions of the Boole which
he hereby proposes to offer to the public
First, It comprises the most valuable informa-
tion in all the important departments of Know-
ledge, collected and arr mf-ed by some of the
best scholars, and the most comprehensively
scientific men, this day existing in Britain
Secondly. This information is comprised, in a
small compass, and conveyed in language at
once perspicuous and elegant ; so that the
reader may, in a short sjasce of time, with
ease and pleasure to himself, obtain that real
acquaintance with the moral, literary, politi-
cal, and philosophical world, which other
wise could not be acquired from the larger
works in which the sources of these streams •
pf knowledge aj'e contained, but by a whole
l'ne devoted to severe and unremitted labour.
In order to render the work worthy of the
patronage, of the American public, the Pub-
lisher has engiged all the best American
Artists to en jjjrave the Copper-Plates, of which
138 will be give« in the course of tire work j
and has also secured the assistance of Edi.
tors of acknowledged talents and information.
It is with the blended emotions of confi-
dence and delight, that the Publisher an-
nounces his intention of offering to his nu-
merotis patrons and supporters, a work
which combines eloquence with economy, and
practicable utility with splendor.
That the Patrons and Subscribers of this
intended Publication, may be thoroughly as-
sured of not having their patronage and pro-
tection abusrd by any defect in the execution
of the work itself, or any want of punctuality
in its appearance, at the stated and appointed
times, the page given as a specimen of the
style in which the publisher solemnly pledges
himself the whole shall be executed, may be
seen at the office of the Federal Gazette
On account of the great abundance, of mat-
ter and the number of Engravings which the
work will contain, and in consequence of the
vast expence necessarily attending the prose.
oution of such a plan, the publisher is com.
pelle 1 to solicit the aid of a sufficient number
of subscribers, to enable him to carry his pur-
pose into Full effect, before he puts any part
of the intended Publication into the hands of
the Engraver or the Printer.
The acknowledged and intrinsic merits of
the work are such as to ensure it a very ge-
neral and extensive circulation : wherefore
it o'.ily remains to the Publisher to ensure
to his subscribers that the whole of the exe-
cution, as to the accuracy and elegance of the
engravings,.paper, and type, shall be such,
as In every respect to correspond with the
high value of the work. As to the engrav-
ings, as yet no spscimen can be given; but
the Publisher pledges himself that they slii.ll
be at least equal, and many superior to those
in the London edition-
That there may be no possibility of dis-
appointment to the patrons of literature as to
this work, the subscriptions are.proposed to
be received on the following
* CONDITIONS :
1st. The whole shall be comprisedin Twelve
parts, one of which shall be published month-
ly. Each part shall contain about 150 quarto
pages, neatly done up in colored paper, at the
price of Two Dollars and Seventy five Cents,
which is to be paid for on the delivery of
each part—the whole twelve parts when
completed will make two volumes in quarto,
containing 238 Copper-Plate Engravings,
wUich alone are worth the price of the whole
work. It will coiuaju more than double the
matter of any similar work that has ever
been published in this country.
2dly One Dollar shall be paid at the time
of subscribing, and to he deducted on the
delivery at the twelfth part.
3diy. If the work be not executed in every
respect equal to the engagement l»ereby made
the subscribers shall, on returning ihe ve-
inmes, receive back the amount of their sub-
scription money which has been advanced.
If required, the publisher will give a Cerfz'.
ficate, pledging himself to that effect, to each
subscriber, at the time of subscribing.
4t.bly. The price ct each part will • e rais.
ed to Three Dollars, the moment that the
work is put to press ; and even then, the
<&>ArVcexpense of a work which contains the
substance of all that is known on every sub-
ject, literary and scientific, will be only 36
Dollars.

Just received from Amsterdam, & for salqt
at the Book and Stationary Store of COLE V
I. BONSAL,, 174, Market street, a few co-
pies of the following describee^ Allegorical
Picture in Memory of 1TUS VI.
Gentlemen desirous of possessing a copy,
should lose no tune—the price being very
low it is expected they will be speedily dis-
posed of.
" A revered pontiff, a magnanimous sove-
reign—a noble and affecting spectacle to eartl*
and heaven ; he honored at once, by his trans-
cendant virtues, misfortune, age, the throne
and the altar." VAbbi helille.
This Picture designed by 1. Kuyper, paint-
ed by A de Lelie, and engraven by L For*,
man, represent s the interior of a temple, in the
midst of which is placed a sepulchre, on which
is raised the bust oi Pius VI. Behind the se .
pulcttre appears Time ; he is surrounded by
the dark clouds of oblivion, in which he seem»
desirous of enveloping the bust. But the e-
vents which have signalised the epoch of PlUf
the Sixth's reign, and their influence on the
destiny of that pontiff, are too reniarki.ble ;
his virtues, and above all, his patierce and re-
signation truly christian, form too great a con-
trast with" ihe immorality of his age, to permit
oblivion ever to be his lot." Under the figure
of a woman transported with a holy zeal, Me-
mory, who immortalizes great men, arrests
the menacing arm of Time j whilst on one
side of the bust, History, in an attitude of
reflection, fixes upon this scene a penetrating
eye, and consecrate s in her annals the eventa-
of the reign of Pius VI. Iti the front of the
picture is afemale figure, absorbed in profound
grief, and reclining on the emblematical signs
of the pontifical dignity. On the opposite side'
is represented the church, under the emblem
of two women, plunge', in affliction. Near the
bust, and bifore an altar, on which insense i*
burning, Religion, always calm, is busy in con«
soling and encouraging them.
Cennoiseeurs will easily perceive, that be-
sides the beauties of the detail, and the ex.
pression suitable to each figure, this Picture
has at the same time the merit of presenting^'[
ail parts of the allegory in so pe rfect an agree-
ment, that, without fatiguing the eye 01 the
mind, it equally charms both the one and the
other.
