August 13. PRICES CURRENT THIS DAY. Wheat, . 556—-6s. Flour, 27s— f.bacco,. 27s—30s, Corn, 26s.— , Whiskey, 3s— Hemp, 51— The. excessive'rains of Tuesday night and Wednesday last,- produced a greater fresh in the Rappahannock than has been known for more than 9,0 years ; and we fear the destruction occasioned thereby, in the upper country, is great indeed.—In this town and neighborhood, several individu- als have been severe sufferers, particularly Mr. Robert Dunbar, in the loss of his valu- able bridge at Falmouth, the wood-work of which was entirely swept away by the des- tn.'.c'ive torrent ; together with the almost entire demolition of the extensive canal which conveyed the water to the mills of Mr. Dunbar and Mr. R ichards-. The canal on this side the river, which conveyed the water to the mill of Messrs. Cooch and Hol- lingswarth, was greatly injured, and the wood-work at the head destroyed. The house on Johnston and Young's wharf, oc- cupied by Mr. Donaldson, and another oc- cupied by Mr. MacWilliams have been car- ried off. A small vessel, loaded with oys- ter shells, broke her fasts and was dashed to pieces against Gaffel's wharf—-several other small vessels parted their cables and have g ne do'vn with the current. The mea- dows of Messrs. Williams, Minor, Morti- mer, Lewis, &c. were entirely overflowed, and great losses sustained in hay, corn, &c The watercontinued to rise at ten o'clock last night. , Two nothern mails and one southern are now due. cT that government towards this country. [U. S. Gazette.] " Capt. Love's Letter, upon which we animadverted last week, hasj as was rea- sonably to be expected, excited a very strong sensation in America'. It was sent express to the president, and some strong measures it is supposed will be restored to by the government on the occasion.—The promptitude of this country in protesting against capt. Ljwe's canduct, "will it is hoped, evince to the Americans the sense of the nation upon this man's puerile folly, and contumelious im- pudence." Extract of a letter from a gentleman ai Richmond, dated August 15. " Colonel Burr's trial is now proceeding ; out of forty-eight Veniremen, four only •were received ; the rest objected to, per Cause given, or suspended; the propriety of their serving was argued all day yesterday. The judgment of the court was, that they were not proper jurymen, as having prejudg- ed the case—a new panel is ordered for this day." TRIAL OF AARON BURR. (Continued by adjournment and held at the ca- pital in the hall of the house of Delegates.) for high treason against the United States. irid.iy, August 7. The following new witnesses appeared this day : Lieut. Swaringen, William McFarlane and Lewis Kerr. i iag the Subpoena Duces Tecum, when Mr. I Hay stated that he had found gen. baton's ! letter, aniong certain papers transmitted by i Mr, Rodney, & had filed it with the clerk. Private letters from Liverpool, of so late a date as June 24th, are silent on the subject of a rupture between the United States and Great-Britain ; and, far from expressing any apprehensions of such an event, they state that the shipments of the present sea- son to this country, would be qutie as great as heretofore. Every body has known so much, and we are all so apt to talk of, the case of Colonel Burr, that to find a jury, all of whom are en- tirely free from having expressed opinions a- gainst tbe accused, is likely to V found no very easy matter. Portland (Main) August 10. Lieut. Laura-ice, of Hie Navy,, who is now stationed here to superintend the depar- ture'of the gun-boats who was .(jrdered in the first instance to inlist.his. .men for two months, has, the last Seek, received new orders to inlist them for,tw;o yea'ta. " - Mr. Hay, observed, that he had nothing more to submit to the court ; and that he hoped all the material witnesses would be present on Monday, and enable him to pro- secute the trial. Monday, August 10. Herman Blannerhasset was this day bro't into court. The following gentlemen appeared and were recognized : Return J. Meigs, Mau- rice P. Bellnap, Charles Duval, James Taylor, Tunis Dils, Bennett Cook, He- zekiah Lewis, and G. B. Vanhorne. Mr. Wirt moved the court to discharge Dr. Wavdlaw, one of the venire. His wife was in extreme danger, and required the assistance of a sea-voyage. The vessel would sail to-morrow. C. Justice.—is the court to understand that there is no objection to this measure ? Mr. Buw—If the remark be addressed to me, Sir, I can only say, that I shall remain passive dm ing the transaction. Dr. Wardlaw was then dismissed. Mr. McRae also moved the discharge of Mr. Randolph Harrison, whose extretre indisposition was attested by a certificate from Dr. Adams. Mr. H. was accordingly dismissed in the same manner. Mr. Hay moved, that H. Blannerhasset be arraigned for high treason ; which Mr. lions opposed, on the ground that he had not been furnished with a copy of the indictment for three days. After some desultory conver- sation on this circumstance, Mr. Botts re- quested that Mr. B. might be re-conducted to the penitentiary, as he was extremely indisposed, and the heat nearly overpowered him. No opposition was made, and Mr. B. was accordingly re conducted to his prison. At Mr. Hay's request, the pannel of the jury was called over by the deputy-marshal, and also at Mr. Burr's request, the list of the witnesses whom he had subpoenaed for the purpose of investigating the qualification of some of the Venire. Mr. Hay read a certificate from Dr. Up- shaw, stating that Mr James Henderson is sick of a bilious fever, and incapable of at- tending. Mr. McRea then read a certificate from Dr. Greenhow, shewing that David Bullock, Esq. one of the Venire, was prevented by indisposition from discharging his duties. Mr. B. was accordingly excused. The clerk informed Mr. Burr, that he was at liberty to challenge such of the Venire as he might object to. Mr. Burr begged leave to inform the jurors, who were within hear- ing, that a great number of them may have formed and expressed opinions about him, which might disqualify them from serving on this occasion : He expected that as they came up, thev would discbarge the duties of conscientious men, ar.d candidly state all these objections. [The deputy-marshal then proceeded to summon the witnesses. After the callii g of most of whom much conversation and argu- ment ensued ; as this was generally, not very interesting, we deem it unnecessary to detain the press to-day for much detail. On Tuesday, tbe nth, some of the coun- sel indulged in warm and improper remark. Chief justice demanded that the govern- ment be not treated with disrespect. Mr. Martin, speaking of the counsel for the pro- secution wishing, as they professed, to save time, observed, " He talks, sir, of econo- my of time. And is wis the way to eco- nomise it >. I had a specimen of this mode when here on a'former occasion. Yes, sir, I well know these gentlemen would save our time. They would, if they could, de- prive colonel Burr's counsel of an opportu- nity of defending him from the Merchants' Goffee-House Books. August 16. Arrived, schr.
