greatest polj'l ie \fter informing capt.
D. that ihe vessel and cargo was neutral
'property, he observed to me, that being
found on board a French registered vessel
it could be considered nothing else than
.Trench piopeity, and that he should deter-
mine on nothing until he received advice
from the Admiral ('ying on the other side
of ihe i land). Some days after I again
went on board, when he informed me he
had come to no conclusion; that he then
considered it lawfully a prize, but should
he determine on returning the property he
would make a signal.
Two days after, seeing the appointed
signal flying, I sent my mate on board ;
but it proved to be a signal to another ship
of war lying there . he however said, that
the Admiral had left the affair discretional
w ith him, but that on supposition of my
¦ being the sufferer should he keep the pro-
perty, he generously returned, not only the
cargo, but the craft, together with four
¦ French prisoners ; for which I take this
method of returning him mysincere thanks.
In consequence of my going' on board
the British ship of war, I »*as arrested and
vessel and cargo taken as security for my
appearance at the trial ; but some days af-
ter released bv an order from the minister

Seventh Regiment of Maryland Militia, in
Baltimore county, on Wednesday, the 19th
instant, after performing the military evolu-
tions of the day, the battalion resolved itself
into a committee of the whole, of which
Colonel Thomas Deye Cockey was unani-
mously chosen chairman, and Captain U'tl-
ilam Jamison appointed secretary.
Resolwd, That major Isaac Dickson, ma-
jor Joshua Frederick Cockey, captain Abra-
ham Hicks Price, captain Stephen Wheeler
George Harryman, and John Bond, esqrs
be, and they are hereby appointed a com
mittee to draught resolutions expressive of
the sense of this meeting in the present
crisis of national affairs.
The commitlee having retired for a few-
minutes, returned with the following reso-
lutions, which were unanimously adopted :
Considering the numerous instances oi
insult offered to the United States, and op-
pression practised on their citizens by the
authorised agents of the British government
for many years past, and viewing with un-
qualified indignation, with unmixed abhor-
rence, the late dastardly, unmanly, savage
conduct of the commander of the British
ship Leopard towards the United States
frigate Chesapeake—
Resd-ued unanimously, That we cordially
approve of and proudly sympathise with
the American Spirit displayed by our brethren
of Norfolk, Portsmouth, Hampton, &c. on
that sad occurrence.
Resolved unanimously, That at the risk of
every thing most dear to freemen, we will
support the constituted authorities of our
insulted country, in whom we have the
fullest confidence, in all their endtavors to
obtain ample satisfaction for the monstrous
outrage.
Resolved unanimously, That the foregoing
resolutions be published id the newsapers
of the city of Baltimore, and copies signed
by the chairman and secretary be forthwith
transmitted to the president of the United
States, and the governor of this state.
Resolved unanimously. That the thanks of
this meeting be presented to the chairman
and secretary for their conduct on the pre-
sent occasion.

Death, yesterday morning, deprived this
city of one of the most promising mem-
bers of our community. Mr. JACOB
NOR11IS, in the 26th year of his age,
distingushed for the good qualities cf his
heart and the urbanity of his disposition no
less than by an as.v''-- - j'ttqnttor. ' '
duties of a respcctiable mercantile concern,
Fell a victim to that unrelenting monarch,
whose hand spares neither age nor sex, and
who is deaf alike tothe voice of friendship &
the lamentations of consanguinity. In the
prime of life, a pleasing prospect in view,
with affectionate relatives, and friends sin-
cerely devoted to his service, he has drop-
Bed into the grave, leaving a melancholy
void in the hearts of all those who knew his
worth and jsstly appreciated his virtues.
