CH ABLEST' N, August 36.
We are informed that general Pinckney,
with colonels Stevens, Hutlcdge and Roper,
and majors Ward and Howard, -went on
Monday last to Fo t Johnson, to visit the
Engineer, Captain Macomb, who arrived a
few days since from Rocky Mount, agreea-
alily to the invitation of the committee of
the citizens. The Engineer communicated
very freely with his visitors on the subject
ef fortifying our harbor ; he has written to
the secretary of war advising him of its de-
fenceless state ; and as arrangements have
not yet been made for executing his plans of
permanent fortifications, he will immediate-
ly have some temporary wor)cs thrown up,
¦which will secure us against any sudden at-
tacks. The military agent, lieut. Roberts, is
engaged in collecting materials for fortilica-
tiotvs at Forts Johnson, Moultrie and Pinck.--
»ey. As captain Macomb is an officer of
much science and activity- strongly disposed
to meet the wishes of the citizens of Charles-
tun, and will be benefitted by the talents and
experience of our-dhrtmguisTJed veteran and
patriot gen. Pinckney, we may confidently
hope, and expect, that our harbour will soon
be in a resp" table state of defence. A sup-
ply of powder and a furthar supply of can-
non, musketsand military stores was yester-
day received from Washington

From the Charleston Courier,
On the Treatment of Persons Struck loilk
Lightning.
The physician who attended Thos. Jones, :
the unfortunate man (belonging to tbe cus.
tom-housv) mentioned in the Courier of the j
8th hist, to have been struck, with lightning
during the last thunder storm, is happy in
giving publicity to the following treatment,
Which was employed in tiiat instance, with i
the most unequivocal and decided effects ; ;
as it confirms, under some n-.odiKcation, the
practice which has before been recommended
to notice, and from its simplicity may at all
I times be readily and conveniently used.
Sucb, however, are the varying phenome-
na attending this awful occasion, that a
change of treatment Irom what is here ad-
vised, may often be necessary. From this
consideration it is presumed and hoped that
professi mal advice and assistance will never
he neglected, when the same can be prompt-
ly obtained. •
As early as possible after the accident the
body is to he drenched with water, which
must be poured on the head and dashed on
the breast, back, he. Tbe extremities and
body must next be industriously ruhbed for
some time; pungents, as hartshorn, &c.
must next be applied to the nostrils, which
may also be stimulated with feathers dipped
in the same, and air may in some cases be
blown into the nostrils. If there should be
no appearance of rescussitation, the applica-
tion of water and friction, fire may be re-
peated. As soon as the pulse is discovered,
increased warmth, and symptoms of return-
ing life, blood should be taken, if from a
plethoric or gross subject, in both arms and
to the quantity of at least one pint. When
the more alarming symptoms are removed,
solutions'of Glauber salts in sufficient quan-
tity will be proper. The ¦ ritreme thirst
which attends in these cases, when recover,
mg should be gratified with tirst a few drops
of hartshorn and water, and afterwards co-
pious draughts of water or any other drink
which the patient may desire.
This treatment has in the above instance
most happily succeeded. The patient was
for about one hour perfectly insensible, and
life appeared almost extinct. Water and
frictions, &c. were used in succession until
a convulsive motion of the limbs and rigors
were observed and were the first symptoms
of returning life. On continuing the above
remedies, at the expiration of an hour and
a quarter he was so far recovered as to raise
his hand, which he applied to the crown of
his head, and soon after began to speak
incoherently, conplained that his scull was
broken and of a most violent pain in his
head and back, but continued delirious for
more than eight hours, which at length
completely yielded to bloodletting and phy-
sick.
He is now quite recovered, the pain in
his head almost entirely removed—and he is
anxious to prosecute his business. On in-
terrogating him—he is not in the least con-
scious of what had happened to him.
The application of water may possibly
conduct off s ..me of the clectrick matter with
vd^ch the body is so highly charged ; and
itis also more than probable that it acts by
tuddenly reducing that very excited state of
the system, which is prostrated, by the sud-
den abstraction of excitement, a due sur-
face for action is accumulated. When fric-
tions and stimulants are useful and will res-
cussitate, but as an inordinate action of the
i vital powers will then succeed, blood-let-
! ting, &c. will be generally necessary
